Is frosting as (or more) important than the cake?

The frosting thread has reared it's Butter Creamed head, again.

My mother used to make a lot of wedding cakes with Royal Icing (marzipan under that). They looked beautiful, but it took a hammer and chisel to cut into them.

True, but still better than the dreadful fondant that is everywhere these days. Look at this! Crap that come in industrial bins is not frosting. Not any that any human should want to eat. Of course this garbage is all about visuals, not taste: that's why it comes in such apuke-worthy rainbow of colours, all "Vanilla flavor."

Why anyone would want a cake that looks made out of play dough is baffling.

FYI, Zeez, here are the basic frosting recipes I grew up with, including a real fondant, not one you roll out that comes in an industrial bin.

You might want to pick up this, Zeez. I'm close to buying it myself since the illustrations are done by the same artist who drew the instructions in a children's cookbook I used to have.

Edited to add:

In looking up that old cookbook, I stumbled into a sad devolution in illustration: look at the progression in covers for the book. The last one, the most recent, is one of the ugliest and most insulting children's book covers I've seen in a long time. It's truly horrifying.

It's too bad i struggle with an addiction to sugar!

As someone training to be a baker. Crumb quality is much more important than the fats you top it with.

Both are important. But which bowl do you wanna lick immediately?

Here's a recipe I hope to try soon: Ginger Fudge Cake (the "fudge" is caramel fudge).
