The Laws of Abraham and Sarah

Post by _Buffalo »

In D&C 132, Joseph Smith takes the decisions made by a couple of characters in a story and turns them into a law - without explanation of what mechanism changes an action by a famous Biblical character into a law.

Is this something that is applicable across the scriptures? Examples:

According to the law of Noah, you must curse your son if he happens to find you naked and drunk.

According to the law of Elisha, you must sic wild bears on anyone who makes fun of your male pattern baldness

According to the law of Adam, you must blame all your mistakes on your wife

According to the law of Lot and his daughters, a lack of available husbands is a good excuse for incest

According to the law of Joseph Smith, defamation is a good response to being turned down for sex

And so forth.

LOL

The so-called Law of Sarah has got to be the dumbest law ever imagined. But, the Noah one is way up there, maybe second place.

I do this everyday I walk by the elementary school and the kids make fun of me. ;)

The parents are really pissed when the bears come out, however.

Huh, I don't remember this story. I better go look it up! Sounds like a fun one for FHE tonight!

Actually, I have a correction. Noah curses his grandson when his son sees his nekkidness.

I've heard somewhere that the story of Noah (post flood) is taken from an old fable about the first person to invent wine.

Genesis 9:

18 ¶ And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.
19 These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.
20 ¶ And Noah began to be a husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
21 and he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.
22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.
25 And he said,

Cursed be Canaan;
a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.
26 And he said,

Blessed be the LORD God of Shem;
and Canaan shall be his servant.
27 God shall enlarge Japheth,

and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem;
and Canaan shall be his servant.
28 ¶ And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.
29 And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.
