1.Do as much research as possible away from the Internet — with living people, in real places.

Absolutely agree! But Stephen King advises waiting until the story is done before tackling research. He says, since much of what one writes will end being cut, there's no sense researching for a part that won't be in the story.

That's pretty good advice. I don't care much for Stephen King's writing, but it definitely makes sense to have your story before you do the research for details.
