72-hour Board Emergency Survival Kit

Post by _moksha »

Boards go down for many reasons. This can throw regular posters into fits of consternation.

Here are a few ideas that many boards could use and benefit from:

1. Have the head moderator e-mail participants and let them know the board is down and where they could go on the web for further information.

2. A prearranged alternate message board should be known and posted ahead of time.

3. The moderator should send out a second email when the board is back up.

4. It should be the responsibility of individual posters to have a supply of diet coke and snack foods on hand to nourish and strengthen your body during this hiatus, so that you can resume posting with vigor.

How can the head moderator e-mail anyone if the board is down?

What happened last time is a pretty good plan. People regroup at other boards and hope the main board gets set back up soon.

Well, I think that each of us needs to be assigned friends... lets call them, oh, I don't know, maybe home teachers? They could let us know what is most important for our MD salvation, and maybe even keep us holding onto the iron turnstile. Perhaps they could also be in charge of Polygamy Porter delivery.

How can the head moderator e-mail anyone if the board is down?

Head mod anticipates outage 12 hours ahead of time (well within the capabilities of the Shades/Keene combo), and posts a message on MDB with emergency instructions, including the designated 'soft-landing' hot-site. Then calls emergency services to report the location and severity of the expected outage. Head mod then posts a 'gather round' message at the designated site.

Wardens/Searchers check the washrooms, and help board members who use wrist supports for their CTS or are otherwise in need of assistance. Board members report at designated site and reply to the 'gather round' message. Head mod takes roll call, and prepares to advise emergency services personnel about non-responders and possible casualties, including members who may be trapped by their OS/browser combination.

Once safely ensconced at the designated site, MDB members drink cocoa and sing 'Kumbaya' until MDB is restored to its former glory.

Done!

Note: Any board member who doesn't log in to MDB at least once every 12 hours, and so misses the emergency instructions, didn't deserve to see the notice - outer darkness is too good for such.

PS: I once wrote a company emergency evac plan - can you tell?

ETA: For those who miss the emergency instructions, Simon, based on their IP addresses, puts them on permanent ban.

By having an email list of participants on your computer in a file that will enable you to check a box and email a message to us. Either that or create a Dr. Shades Facebook page.

It would be nice for posters to know what specific board(s) that will be on. Actually a Shades Facebook page would be nice alternative. I had to send an email to Infymus to find out last time what was going on and he promptly emailed me back. I never go to boards with a harsher attitude toward Mormons than this one unless they have some redeeming humor value.

Protect yourself and these boards by not posting stolen intellectual property. That is a good start.
