It sounds to me like any "gentiles" over the age of 8 could have easily been excluded from the innocent blood category.

A Vietnamese priest (who had certainly had his share of suffering) once explained it to me in this way; "Every time you sin, you cause Christ to suffer more." It is very simple. Corollaries of this are whenever you cause another to suffer, you cause Christ to suffer more. If you love Jesus, you won't want to sin. If you love your suffering fellow human, you can see something of Christ in him, and you will want to ease his suffering. If you, yourself suffer, you can identify with Christ that much more.
The Book of Mormon passage about the Gadiantons wearing lambskins which had been washed in lamb's blood reads to me like the atonement is used as an excuse for continuing to sin. Not really loving Jesus. Causing others to suffer because of your own unexamined sin is probably the ultimate of this.
