The "five name" program has been going on in our stake for about 2+ years now. Every auxilary has a person in the presidency assigned to the missionary program. Each auxilary is supposed to come up with 5 names/families per MONTH to give to the missionaries. These are typically less active and part member homes. The primary even has to do it, which is creepy because the primary works with children/minors.

Hey! We are doing the same thing in our stake. Are you in a Utah or non-Utah stake?

Anyway, the missionaries have always given out challenges and promises, but I find that they very rarely follow up. Yay.

You MUST be in the Toronto area... my experience exactly.

I think I would have been tempted to say that I don't know anyone who can currently afford to be a Mormon...

wow Justme this happened to me just before I stopped going to church and I was already doubting a lot. I told other members of the ward that the missionaries did this to me and I came to find out that they did this to everyone in the ward.

I then came across some talk that Elder Erwine wrote that totally went against what they were doing. I can't remember what it said but I read it to these missionaries and that basically shut them up. I'll try and hunt down that talk if I have some time :)

He was really good. My heart did a flipflop/drop thing. I wanted to ask if they used that line on everyone, but refrained for the sake of family peace.

There was some discussion. He said in his close that he knew the spirit witnessed that we have someone who is ready because we all felt it.

I'm not sure how the other adults in the room felt, but the whole thing felt very emotionally manipulative to me. They were really good at it, too.

Why do you assume it to be manipulation. Maybe it actually happened. Why doubt it? Now all you need to do is to pray about the name and see what happens. Wouldn't you be surprised if you actually found that name and that person was baptized into the LDS church. Now of course, I know you. You would not want anyone baptized into the LDS church. So, the idea of manipulation comes into play. I don't think that these guys are lying about the spirit. That would be a betrayal of their mission.

Did they run their fingers along the ward list like a Ouija board and wait until their finger was forced to stop? Was it like the movie "Changling" where they heard a distant, whining voice cry out: "Justme.... ooooohhhhhh, must have.... a... visit..... they.... have a name.... for you....."

I don't know zee, when you were a member did the holy spirit ever whisper something to you? I would imagine so. I don't think that it has changed since then.

Note to self: avoid feeding the missionaries (not that anyone would ever ask me...)
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Wow, they are still using that BS?

I remember that specific BS from the missionaries after we feed them back in 2003.

Same exact lines, except no ward mish leader, just the two of em praying before they came over.

I simply told them that I do not discuss religion with my coworkers, neighbors, or friends, THEREFORE I will never have a name for them.

But they continued. When they turned to my then 10 year old son, I stop them and said it was not appropriate and said it was time to end the night.

From then on we had no such requests from missionaries we fed. Until these two left the ward, they would avoid eye contact with us at church.

Stupid kids from a stupid cult.
