Polygamy in the Islamic world

Post by _zeezrom »

I just read an interesting article on polygamy in Jordan. http://www.themedialine.org/news/news_d ... wsID=32625 A couple of points of interest:

supporters of polygamy use religious justifications for their standpoint, whereas women's organizations who oppose the phenomenon tend to use secular argumentation

...polygamy wasn’t limited to tribal areas in southern Jordan but was quite common in poor neighborhoods throughout the kingdom, including Amman.

...it was rather the rich urban Jordanians who preferred to take more than one wife and not the agricultural rural inhabitants, where women were more independent and worked outside the home.

I think it's interesting how there is confusion about whether the poor vs. rich tend to practice polygamy more but there seems to be consensus that it is the more religious people that practice it over secular folks.

This person's observation also indicates that it is education that is making polygamy less popular.

It's an inferior form of plural marriage; being limited to only four. LDS plural marriage also allows husbands to be whipped and such. Plus, Islamic plural marriage practice is allowed now, contrary to God's commands.

All I know is that I had a good polygamy joke when I went to the kebab shop I could get a free kebab.

Which command of God are Islamic polygamists breaking?

Does any one know what is happening to those polygamists in Africa who join the Church?

Do they have to stop living with their wives, get divorced?

Hinckley said anyone having anything to do with polygamy would be chucked out of the Church - is that what's happening in Africa?

My son used to go to a Turkish barber who said his brother back in Turkey was Mormon and had two wives. I did not know that there had been Mormons in Turkey but I checked on the history and found that it had been dedicated for missionary work years back, and there had been converts, but then the mission was abandoned. Maybe there are families of Mormons still living there who are Mormon in all respects, but since they are isolated practice polygamy.

My understanding based on working with women in an Islamic community in the US, and having attended various conferences and talks on this topic is that educated women do not consider polygamy these days. They abhor it as most all other women in the modern world.

Having said this, some very educated Islamic women did tell me that the men, (father, uncles, brothers), are often the ones who make the deal, (marriage), however they will honor the wishes of the woman.

Another point several women made to me is that the law is stated that if a man takes additional wives he must treat them all exactly the same which of course is impossible hence polygamy is not what God wanted. Any man who does not treat his wives exactly the same is breaking the law. Of course I am fairly certain this is only an interpretation for educated women and men still, it was a very significant teaching and is possibly the way the teaching will be embraced as more and more people are educated.

What the F are you talking about? And what does "and such" refer to?

And of course it is the number that makes it inferior, not the basic nature itself. Got it.

LDS plural marriage also allows husbands to be whipped and such.

Whipped? By whom? When? Under what circumstances. And what wife ever whipped her husband? Documentation, please.

Plus, Islamic plural marriage practice is allowed now, contrary to God's commands.

Unless, of course, the Islamic God is the true God, in which case, Mormons are toast.
