According to this official church publication, it happened around early June of 1829. http://josephsmith.net/josephsmith/v/in ... 5e340aRCRD

Was this event recorded in the 1833 book of Commandments? hmmmm.

Exactly. Was it ever canonized? No. Was it ever read into the record? No. Why not?

We have the exact date for the Aaronic priesthood restoration, but somehow we have misplaced, misfiled, mishandled the restoration of the higher priesthood... the one necessary for anything official.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Could there possibly be a bigger blunder in the Universe?

Here is a list of some of the biggest mistakes in history:

* Naming Native Americans, Indians
* Napoleon Bonaparte's attempt to conquer Russia
* Building a large tower on soft soils in Italy in 1173
* Rowe turning down the Beatles
* Western Union Telegraph Company turns down the idea to buy the telephone patent
* Ford decides not to update the Model T design
* Captain Edward Smith crashes the Titanic into an iceberg
* Second Ottoman siege of Vienna
* Exxon-Valdez or BP Oil Gulf Coast
* Munich agreement
* Buildup to WWI
* Challenger O-ring
* Destruction of the Library of Alexandria
* Chernobyl

Where does "Forget to record the restoration of the Power of God to the earth after 1500 years of apostasy" go on that list?!

That would be #1.

Which gives us all an indication of how important the church feels it is... "some weeks..."

Good grief.

Joseph started the church before he had the necessary authorization and power to take such action; he started polygamy before he had the authorizing power to seal.

There's a pattern there.

Somehow, in my studies of church history, I skipped this little nugget. I just told my wife about it and her comment was, wow.... followed by a quiet pause.

I'll have to start reading Quinn's Origins Of Power book tonight.

It is the basis for my questioning that there is such a thing as priesthood authority. If it wasn't important enough for Joseph et al to record it's restoration, then why should I pay attention?

He always made sure to make note of the times he could ride the horse drawn sled with his kids but never mentioned 3 guys who lived with Jesus came to give him the power of God that had been missing for over a thousand years?!

Daniel Peterson wrote:Actually, the Church's historical practices were strikingly meticulous from a very early date -- particularly in view of the uneducated character of its early members and leaders.

Latter-day Saint historians today have the benefit (and the curse) of a perfectly enormous collection of records.

There are holes here and there, but, overwhelmingly, it's a pretty impressive body of materials.

that's a big hole for possibilty the biggest pivotal event in church history gets overlooked for so many years after. I find it highly unlikely that they would not have recorded this event right after.

The timeline can actually be found in the 7 Volume History of the Church. I can't recall exactly, but it's either V.1 or 2, where it first mentions the "higher priesthood". Prince's book Power from on High: The Development of Mormon Priesthood is a better source than Quinn.

"though Prince finds that epiphanies and revelations occurred, he also finds that many of the traditional stories are quite inaccurate." from the review of the book on amazon.com.

So we don't have to waste money on the book can you summarize the 'quite inaccurate' stories? Also, just when this guy thinks the higher priesthood was given - if it ever was?
