Apostle Holland's Lying in General Conference
Has Apostle Holland's lying in the 179th General Conference where he claimed to be holding the very Book of Mormon Hyrum read from to Joseph just days before their deaths been discussed here?
I did a quick search and didn't find that this subject has been discussed here before. Did I not look hard enough?
I just stumbled upon this information today, I had missed it somehow. Interesting that it was the Church News that provides the evidence that proves Apostle Holland beyond any doubt to have been lying his ass off.

CFR,
There's no way an Apostle would do something like that, especially in General Conference.

Yes, it was discussed. Welcome to discuss it again. The antics of Paid Ministerial LIARS is always a good topic.

I think you are joking but anyway, there are quite a number of sources. Here is one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snex7Pxg ... ded#at=403 forward to 6:11 in the video.jon wrote:CFR,

Nomomo,
There are two books (at least) which have had that claim made for it. The one you mention came from the wife of one of Hyrums's counsins (George A.). The Deseret News (your authoritative source) mentions the other book (and the one that Holland held up) here:
http://www.deseretnews.com/article/7053 ... erved.html
This copy was kept by Hyrum's son (Joseph F. Smith) with a note that he wrote in it (in 1898) detailing that it was the book that Hyrum marked before leaving for Carthage.
Generally, I think, most people accept the book that Holland held up as having better provenance than the one donated in 2007. At any rate, whichever is the real book that Hyrum used, I am pretty confident that Holland believed that the book he was holding up was the one Hyrum marked personally.

Re: Apostle Holland's Lying in General Conference
I wonder if any Mormons would make a pilgrimage from a distant land to see this book.
I recall being in a Catholic (I think) church once and seeing some old bone that belonged to an ancient saint. It was housed in a glass box where people could come admire and maybe pray next to it.
There is something powerful in the concept of pilgrimages, no? We all do it. Some people (like a good friend of mine) followed the Grateful Dead around. Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, etc. must be full of little artifacts that people would make a pilgrimage to. There's Adam's alter, mounds, the stone box, old book of Mormons, the guns and wine glasses used in Carthage jail, etc.

Oh for shame, how the mortals put the blame on us gods, for they say evils come from us, but it is they, rather, who by their own recklessness win sorrow beyond what is given... Zeus (1178 BC)

It's possible to be just wrong, without being a liar. Perhaps Elder Holland was just wrong.
(Nevo, Jan 23) And the Melchizedek Priesthood may not have been restored until the summer of 1830, several months after the organization of the Church.

Possible. But shouldn't an Apostle just come out and say 'whoops, got that wrong, sorry everyone'. A little note on the website or in the Ensign. Not admitting mistakes is a very fast walk off a very short plank for someone in authority.
