The image posting is disabled because ofthose deliberately posting Deseret News photos and l-dsinc owned photos. Others post copyrighted images without the permission of the legal owners. Now that the site was 'caught' (by a porn writer who did not own copyright to the photo he complained about) any defense of mistake would be difficult to maintain.
If you wanted to follow the rules and be civilized about this you would post your own photos. Post photos that are Public Domain. Post Royalty Free/shared photos that do not have licensing restrictions against this use. Post copyrighted photos you have permission from the owner of the copyright to post or post photos that clearly fall under Fair Use exceptions.
Posting your own photos is probably the easiest. Course when you find that photo of your kid posted as a 'for sale' ad on a NAMBLA site or used to illustrate an online AIDS or sex ad, maybe you will re-think copyright protection.
The trouble with this site is that posters deliberately post images that can get the site shut down. Since some are not trustworthy, all suffer.
Yes, many forums allow posting photos. Most of those are forums I don't visit. I have seen a few I recognized and checked with the owner about it. Some were taken down as a result. The owner can control who, when, where and how their property is used. Some don't care and others are very controlling. That is their right as the legal owner of the photo.
As for 'policing' here? Ask yourselves why Semen Blemont, an avowed ubermormon who would not cry if this site disappeared today, is so set to get people allowed to post images that can get it shut down? Why some persist in posting photos they know are taken from IRI, Deseret News and l-dsinc, knowing it can cause problems? I had seen, asked about and checked TWO photos I recognized before the porn writer did his thing and got the site shut down. Since then I have informed Shades when I have seen one on here that may be questionable. Also informing him how to do searches to check the provenance of images - like donutboy using a "Leave it to Beaver" avatar. Yep, even that could cause trouble and you know dannyboy would not shed a tear if the site were shut down, would he?
The truth is simple, if I recognize a problem I will take action. Policing will be left to the copyright owner. The only ones who complain about this are those using images without permission and those who support it.
A good overview of this can be found at the links below. Do some reading, it won't hurt most of you. It can go a long way toward preventing problems in the future.
