Bishop: You're ready to be ordained to the Aaronic Priesthood, but I need to ask you some questions to determine if you're worthy.

heh...what the heck. I can't imagine my old bishop asking me this stuff when i was 12. Times hve changed I guess. he asked me once about masturbation when I was 17ish--and I believe my response was about the same as yours when you were 12.

You didn't masturbate or even know what it was at age 17 ????????

Seems pretty strange.

I wasn't asked about masturbation until I was interviewed to be a Teacher at the age of 14. Fortunately my father was no longer the Bishop. I'm pretty sure I was asked in every interview I had as a youth after that.

My father later told me how he used to mess with the Priests Quorum. During the annual "sex lesson" (usually taught by the Bishop), my father would say "And if you masturbate, over time you will develop spots on your hands and hair will grow out of your palms." Then he would glance around the room to see who was looking down at their hands. Haaa haaa.

Talking to the Bishop/Stake President was small potatoes. Anyone else here have to speak to a G.A.?

I knew what it was, but I didn't really know how it worked. I'm strange though. All that fear-mongering at church kept me away from it. thikning on it, it seems strange to me to sit in a dark room, or in public arenas for that matter, and pleasure yourself, but since its quite normal I have to accept I'm the strange one.

why me wrote:Confession is technically voluntary. But actually in the old days one could not get communion unless one confessed their sins to the priest before the Mass and this confession had to be a good confession, which would include all the sins that one commited. This was usually done on a saturday. Whether a church has confession booths or some room with a screen is moot. Since boys masturbate and since masturbation is a sin, I would leave it up to your imagination as to what was confessed by boys or even young and old men in a confession.

Are you sure you are catholic? You need to check with your friends on the taliban site. Maybe you should stop commenting on Mormonism on that site and discuss more on the catholic beliefs section.

You are just wrong about having to go to confession before receiving at Mass, going back to the Middle Ages Catholics have been required to go to confession once a year, this was codified in 1917 in the Canon Law. Everyone in my family and my husbands family is/was aware of this. Ever hear the phrase Easter Duty? Oh of course not you're not really Catholic you're LDS. One doesn't have to confess every single sin in order for it to be a good confession and you don't have to go to confession to confess venial sins, these are forgiven at Mass, you should know this occurs since you say you go to Mass.

As to imagining what boys confessed to doing, why would I do that, it's none of my business what other people do, the idea of thinking about what others confess is repugnant I'll leave the imaging to you since you appear to be a natural, swimming in the waters of the gutter.

I think that you need to bone up on the past and just how it was. Once a year is a new policy. But in the past it was once a month and some devout catholics which you are not would still recommend once a month.

Nope not a new policy I think you need to read up on church councils and law, even "anti" Catholics know that the once a year requirement goes back to 1215. That many have and still do advocate more frequent confession is not surprising, JPII advocated weekly confession, but it does not change the fact that Catholics are obligated to go to confession once a year. This minimum is spelled out in an authoritative and binding Church Council and in the Canon Law, that venial sins do not need to be confessed is put forth in the Canon Law and the CCC. Pious lay people like Mr. Richert can recommend anything they like but they don't have any authority unlike the Churches Councils.

Whether or not I'm devout is a matter of opinion and I certainly don't place any value on your opinion of my "devoutness". Just as you shouldn't be bothered by my opinion that you not only lack "devoutness" in any of your religions, you are also a poser if you really do attend a Catholic church, while professing belief in the LDS church.

Let me try this again: in the good ol days, one could not take the communion if one was stained by sin. Thus, people went to confession often. I went to confession once a month like many others. No one said: little why me, once a year is enough.

Q:“ I'm 15 years old. I recently confessed sins of masturbation and perverted thoughts. I have spoken to two priests from different parishes, and they gave me this answer: that because of my age, and because of "raging hormones," I should not worry about it. The Catechism says otherwise. Is masturbation truly a grave sin if you're 15 years old?
”A: Go with the Catechism. It represents what the Church actually teaches. Many teenagers with raging hormones remain chaste. It is quite possible. I suggest that you check out the Pure Love Web site: www.pureloveclub.com

Well, so I guess once a year confession is enough? Masturbation is a mortal sin, thus, it needs to be confessed to the priest. Go figure.

Just to be clear here I don't believe any of your "Catholic boyhood stories" you've admitted your family were not much in the way of being any real practicing Catholics during your life so your claim to know the "good ol days" rings false. My MIL is 93 years old and she has known since she was a little girl that she had to go to confession once a year, she has as long as I've known her, always made a point of making her "Easter Duty". My parents, born in the 1920's taught us growing up that we had to go to confession at least once a year, we were encouraged to go more often but we had to go once a year. These people, my family, unlike you, actually lived Catholicism their whole lives they didn't run off after the first novel thing that came along. These are people that lived through your "good ol days" and during that time they were practicing Catholics. They, again unlike you read, studied, and believed what the Church teaches, you on the other hand have a "made for TV movie" understanding of living Catholicism.

Let me try this again, The Fourth Lateran Council of the Catholic Church, called in 1215 states that the faithful must confess once a year, the Canon Law of the Catholic Church, codified in 1917 also states that the faithful are obligated to confess their sins once a year. Let's see the Canon Law was codified 94 years ago, I bet your "good ol days" fall in there, if not the Council was 796 years ago no doubt your "good ol days" fall in that time frame.

Well, so I guess once a year confession is enough? Masturbation is a mortal sin, thus, it needs to be confessed to the priest. Go figure.

You seem to have trouble with reading comprehension in this thread, I haven't been talking about whether or not masturbation needs to be confessed, (you are the one with masturbation fixation) I have pointed out the Church "rules" about confession which have been "on the books" for almost 800 years. Rules that my family, my husbands family and the families of my Catholic friends always understood, even in the face of strong "encouragement" to follow the interpretations of others.

On the case of masturbation you brought up, you pointed me to the actual teaching in the Catechism and from reading it I see that the priests gave the correct response, the response from catholic.com citing the CCC doesn't seem to be aware that the catechism after saying that masturbation is a mortal sin follows up with this:

To form an equitable judgment about the subjects' moral responsibility and to guide pastoral action, one must take into account the affective immaturity, force of acquired habit, conditions of anxiety or other psychological or social factors that lessen, if not even reduce to a minimum, moral culpability.

Just what the priests said to the "boy" it's sad he can't grasp it.

So not only are you off on the frequency and scope of what is required of the Catholic laity in regards to confession apparently you are off on you understanding of when, your obsession, masturbation, needs to be confessed.
