joe smith a wife beater?

Post by _Joseph »

Entry in the journal of william clayton:
[August 23, 1843] "President Joseph told me that he had difficulty with E[mma] yesterday. She rode up to the Woodworths with him and called while he came to the Temple. When he returned she was demanding the gold watch of F[lora]. He reproved her for her evil treatment. On their return home she abused him much and also when he got home. He had to use harsh measures to put a stop to her abuse but finally succeeded."

So, what 'harsh measures' would a guy known for beating hell out of ministers use on his wife?

Wait...

So no less than twice in this snippit it talks about Emma abusing Joseph, but you ask if Joseph was the wife beater because he "stopped it"???

The passage states that Emma abused Joseph, and that Joseph used harsh means to end it. It says nothing about physical violence - for all we know, abusive and harsh language may have been used. Or, Emma may have hit Joseph and Joseph restrained her.

To state that Joseph beat Emma is a stretch. But then again, you are known for your stretches, Joseph.

Well tornado, read what I wrote...

joethecoxman was known as a violent sort. One who had temper tantrums. One who beat up people and seemed to glory in violence at times.

So... what 'harsh measures' would he use? Beating his wife to shut her up might fill the bill here. He wouldn't be the first, would he?

When I see threads like this it blows my mind that this message board has now become the most popular Mormon related forum.

Then again, maybe it's because of threads like this.

I dunno, Joseph, why don't you tell me? Oh, wait, never mind - what would a guy known for misinterpreting copyright law know about interpreting a simple journal entry?

What we lack in substance we more than make up for in entertainment value.
