Other than my thoughts and prayers, I wish I could do something else to help.

Norway is a beautiful and peaceful country overwhelmingly populated by kind and generous people. I was greatly saddened to hear about the attacks.

My thoughts and prayers are certainly with you and your countrymen, Spurven. I've been following the breaking news with a genuine sense of horror.

I followed the story all day yesterday as it unfolded. So horrifying!

The similarity to the Oklahoma city bombing was undeniable once a suspect was named: the right wing politics, the access to fertilizer. The details of that event are still very familiar to me since I teach a story that references it in my Intro to Lit to course and virtually none of my students are even aware of it.

As more becomes known about the suspect (and any help he may have had) it will be interesting to learn about the kind of anti-immigrant "christian fundamentalist" (I am using the term as per BBC coverage) movement/politics which motivated him. The current profile on the BBC website contains this information:

In a post in Norwegian in an online forum on December 2009, a user named Anders Behring Breivik claims there is not one country where Muslims have peacefully lived with non-Muslims, stating that instead it has had "catastrophic consequences" for non-Muslims.

Mr Breivik was a member of a Swedish neo-Nazi internet forum called Nordisk, according to Expo, a Swedish group monitoring far-right activity.

So, was it just a whack job or do we give credit to the people claiming it? What an awful thing!

Praying for my mother's homeland.

However, I am very disappointed to hear that parents would send their children to a Labour(socialist) camp. That's another cruel travesty in and of itself.

You mean the tweet attributed to a group that according to the NYT: "American officials [have] said [was] previously unknown and might not even exist"?

A real piece of crap, actually.
