Well, of course the members in Utah during the 19th century knew about polygamy. And the members in the early part of the 20th century knew about polygamy. But somewhere along the way, it was forgotten. Here is my guess: when the practiced was stopped the LDS church stopped preaching it and teaching it. It faded into the wind as a practice no longer in need. It had a natural death and became apart of LDS history until it was forgotten.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world. Joseph Smith We are “to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to provide for the widow, to dry up the tear of the orphan, to comfort the afflicted, whether in this church, or in any other, or in no church at all…” Joseph Smith
It is covered in the Nauvoo period of the manual. Now of course, the teacher has much leeway in what to teach about the practice. But certainly where it mentions that it began with a revelation to Joseph Smith, much could be taught. I suppose Consig's daughter missed seminary.

That's funny because I just asked my daughter tonight about how the church practiced polygamy and she told me that it was done only with women who had lost their husbands crossing the Mormon Trail. I asked her if Joseph Smith had lots of wives and she got offended and told me he was only married to Emma. She said it didn't start until the saints moved to Salt Lake City.
She has attended Seminary every day for the past two years. She just turned 16 and has 2 more years to go. So much for the Seminary does a great job teaching about Polygamy you seem to imply
Maybe I haven't been paying attn. enough on the boards but, what is the general TBM consensus as to why exactly God instituted P. with Joseph Smith, since it wasn't a male shortage issue?
Jacob 2:30 which doesn't require a shortage. "Raising up seed unto me" could simply be a better chance for children to be raised in a righteous home.
Why did God institute a moratorium instead of maybe moving his group to an area that allowed it?
No reason given.
Why do TBM's tend to shy away from wishing it back....if it became legal again, since it is an eternal and intregal aspect of LDS philosophy?
Multiple possibilities some of which are:
1) They honestly don't look forward to it. 2) They don't accept it as a valid principle; thinking perhaps Joseph Smith made a mistake. 3.) Maintain peace with their wives.

Have you checked the children?
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Have you read that section of the seminary manual? There is no mention of women who have lost their husbands or that it started with BY. Myths are myths. Americans believed for years in the myths that created America. And they still do. John Wayne was alive and well in creating myths...or should I say hollywood.
The manual was clear about why polygamy started.

Are you talking about America and its history? The money source seems to be in most wars these days, including Libya. And it controls the media and the money source elects politicians. Such is the power of the money source. You are correct that the full truth is not useful.

Most students do not read the manual, do not listen if the teacher brings it up, and more then likely it is not covered in many classes. It is very uncommon in seminary, institute, Sunday school, etc to ever get through a whole teaching manual, nor is it really expected. The church really has failed in this regard, and it is their own fault. This is because it is an uncomfortable subject, and one they would rather have forgotten.
by the way no manuals in the church teach why it was really started. :)
