If Utah county isn't all of Mormonism, how much less "the seventies in NYC" is all of Mormon history.
The implication is that too much Mormon is a bad thing. The concentration of Mormons in NYC is about equal to the concentration of prescription drugs in our cities drinking water (very small). If the logic goes like this:
Where the concentration is small, Mormons tend to be more accepting and open.
With that logic, one would need to conclude that overall, Mormonism should be avoided. Or am I overlooking something here?

I've lived in three different states in the last 25 years, and in my experience, the "beard" thing is a big deal for Mormons everywhere, not just in Utah county. Again, most people here have a lot more experience with Mormonism than you do. It's not surprising that you keep projecting your limited experience on the rest of us.
The beard thing is a big deal up in Canada as well. I think guys want to grow beards up here more cause it is freaking freezing!

Agreed.
Why Me, you use your perception of New York Mormons in the 1970s as normative for the larger LDS culture. Hilarious.
If the leaders of any given organization are asked to refrain from wearing beards, it will probably affect the larger culture. Does anyone really argue with this supposition?
I actually had my mom and visiting teacher gang up on me when I expressed that the hair thing shouldn't be such a big deal since Jesus had long hair and a beard.
They were adamant that it is different today. What was acceptable then is not acceptable now.
They are right. The church does change according to the culture around it.
Oh, and our conversation was actually about the boys who pass the sacrament. It was clear by the conversation that these boys are judged by the length of their hair. People notice and people talk. Names of actual boys were brought up during.

Our bishop believes that all the deacons should look the same (following church grooming standards) so as not to distract the worshipers.

Does individuality and its expression visually distract from worship?
Does focus on worshiping require automaton like uniformity in appearance of others?
If God is great, why is it so hard to focus on Him when worshiping?

Not only that, but apparently it was a tiny branch. Branches are havens for unorthodoxy in the church.
