I was compelled to look at Mr. Why Me's post. Sigh, I was doing so well ignoring him. Just in case anyone was wondering, yes it is true that I'm being very rebellious just like a 16 year old. :)

Lord of the Sith,

Thank you! I appreciate the compliment! my wife apparently likes the mountain man look. I'm heading out to Smith & Edwards right now to buy some manly-man gear so we can do a young coed lost in the woods role playing.

How do you wear a beard the wrong way? Mine just sits there on my face.

It may mean that zee is sporting his hairy face rather well and not exactly looking like a hobo that just left the train. My take on zee is that he is like a 16 year old who has just been giving his freedom from controlling parents. He will do anything within limits to show his rebellious nature. Eventually, he will settle down again and become a Mormon again without the Mormon.

Don't you find it strange that a beard is a sign of rebellion? That facial hair equals freedom?

I'm not a sociologist, but I'm sure there's some technical term for that...where a person participates in normal behaviour and is viewed as a rebel by their faith community.

I just call it backwards.

Such things are cultural markers, with those adhering to them being judged as "one of us." Dress and grooming are important markers in a lot of cultures and religions. I grew up with a Sikh girl whose father was ostracized from his family because he had adopted Western grooming and dress habits: short hair, clean-shaven, and no turban.

Among Mormons, there are a lot of cultural markers, including following the Word of Wisdom, wearing "modest" clothes, keeping your hair cut short, no beard, and so on. Violate any of those, and you've signaled a rejection of the tribe.

For some reason all I can think of is "Hell no, we won't go!" Long hair/beard=Hippie/beatnik=anti-authority
