The Return and Report Series

Post by _moksha »

I was toying with the idea of starting a series of very short stories called Return and Report.

The story first up has the tentative title Peter, James and John vs The Tralfamadorians. After our experience with Joseph, I sort of suspect that all four names might be protected under the DCMA, yet this series might be possible since it could be catagorized as noncommercial fan art. I suppose I could alway seek permission from the Coptic Church and Kilgore Trout.

Anyway, I am open to suggestions.

by the way, does anyone know if Kolob, Earth and Tralfamador are all in the Milky Way Galaxy? I know, I know, flesh out the details before you work on the research, but the whole faster than Warp 9.5 thing if outside the same Galaxy is nagging at me. Of course, the Kae-e-vanrash Drive could solve the problem if outside the Galaxy.

Are Kolob, Earth and Tralfamador are all in the Milky Way Galaxy? I think they can be anywhere your story (or stories) need them to be. At the risk of sounding like a know-it-all, I would suggest that you focus first on the story’s structure and allow the smaller details to take care of themselves along the way.

The best & most succinct definition of “a story” (in my opinion) comes from Algis Budrys, who for several years ran the writer’s workshop at BYU’s annual Life, the Universe, & Everything symposium. According to Algis, a story consists of a CHARACTER in a CONTEXT with a PROBLEM. The character makes three (or more) attempts to solve the problem, after which he succeeds or dies in the final attempt. If he dies, his death need not be literal; a symbolic demise is perfectly acceptable.

I hope this helps you as much as it has helped me.
