A bit disingenuous wouldn't you say? The book was pulled from the 6th grade required reading list. I didn't see that the book would be unavailable to 6th graders, and it certainly is available to older kids.

Still, I wouldn't support this decision, and I certainly do not support baptists (or whomever) when they do the same thing.

Finally, the article said the book is offensive to Mormons. What does that mean? Is it untrue? Or true but offensive? That's the problem with this stuff. Anything and everything is offensive to somebody.

The first Holmes story, "Study in Scarlet," has a polygamy back story. Doyle does trade heavily in the kind polygamy outrage found in popular novels of the time, but whether or not the tale's specific details are completely unhistorical is open to debate in my opinion.

Doyle later visited SLC on a lecture tour and was asked about this story and published a kind of apology having seen how everything was fine and dandy in Zion.

I, however, apologize for this vague and truncated explanation. I woke up late and forgot to order coffee with my grocery delivery yesterday. My brain is completely stalled. I can give a much better response, complete with lots of fun facts n' links, later, if anyone cares.

Right now I have to make a strong cup of tea.

(oh yeah, the school's decision is idiotic)

The first step.
The next step is the "List of Prohibited Books". (Index Librorum Prohibitorum)

The last step is 451° Fahrenheit, the supposed temperature at which book paper combusts.

The memorial of Giordano Bruno (who was on the Index) in the place he was burned alive at the stake, Campo de' Fiori in Rome. The statue is placed so Bruno faces in the direction of the Vatican.

Tough call. If I were a leftwinger, I'd say the book should be banned because of hate against Mormons. But I tend to side with the opportunity to show that Mormons aren't that way and never were. A teacher should look at it as an opportunity to showcase the historical fallacy of antiMormon hysteria.

Well, if parents want to deprive their children of their own culture’s excellent literary tradition, who am I to stop them? The more you shield your children from anything negative about your own religion, the harder it is for them to keep that tradition on their own.

Wait...they picked "Study in Scarlet" instead of "Hound of the Baskervilles"?

This school board needs to have a chat with whoever is choosing the literature.

Oh, and "Study in Scarlet" is fine. At most just give the students a short extract from Sir Doyle's visit to Salt Lake. Then you have a short discussion on sensationalism in literature. Problem solved.
