Now we can at least be sure that the idea that ancient text written on metal plates is an absurdity is itself an absurdity, since not only do we know now that it was a practice in various parts of this world, but they also knew it in Joseph Smith' time.
Those rascally critics who got after Joseph Smith for text on metal plates from the get go didn't do their homework.
Look! There may be water gushing in from the hole in that side of the hull, but there isn't any water coming in from the other side.
So that's all right then, and we can relax.

Please note that I posted my snippet about John Gee coming over to a young Egyptological colleague as a rather angry kind of person before this eyewitness account by CK.
Of course he may be mild as anything really.
Or there may be a pattern here?

Whatever happened to the replies to that thread? Are these them?
Why didn't Gee clarify his question? Why has he not pursued his insinuated accusation against Mike? Perhaps Gee, as he did years ago on the MAD Board, has tucked tail and ran? How embarrassing. No wonder he's so angry!
To Gee's defense, I think his question was pretty clear. Mike, perhaps from some uneasiness of creating more conflict after Roper's exchange, simply had difficulty understanding Gee's question.
However, Gee's question was simply pathetic, and the implications of his question were shameful.
You're absolutely vile and obnoxious paternalistic air of intellectual superiority towards anyone who takes issue with your clear misapprehension of core LDS doctrine must give one pause. - Droopy
Thank you very much to Kishkumen, the narrator, and CK for providing accounts of the goings-on. Of course it comes as no surprise that the old-guard Mopologists would be whispering together at the back of the room, plotting revenge and getting angrier and angrier. Some of the MI defenders have tried to claim that these guys aren't fueled by wrath in any way, despite copious examples, including this latest one.
And I wonder what's in store for Mike Reed after this? Can we expect a smear piece to appear in a future issue of the Review? Time will tell, I suppose.

From what I can tell, Gee is extremely angry. I've always assumed that this is related to the fact that he's been freighted with the onus of trying to defend the Book of Abraham. To listen to him lament about the criticism he's endured is to listen to the words of a beaten-down and deeply resentful man.
