“Take Heed Continually”:
On 22 September 1823, 17-year-old Joseph Smith stood “not far from the top” of the Hill Cumorah’s west side. 1 There he obtained his first view of the gold plates and received instructions concerning them from the angel Moroni. Relating this experience to his family the following day, Joseph told them that “the angel of the Lord says that we must be careful not to proclaim these things or to mention them abroad, for we do not any of us know the weakness of the world, which is so sinful, and that when we get the plates they will want to kill us for the sake of the gold, if they know we have them.” 2

That's why the dimensional portal theory shows up occasionally, because the plates were buried in a cave containing "many wagon loads" of plates and other artifacts, including the Sword of Laban. Obviously such a cave does not exist in Palmyra in any physical sense, and to think that Moroni led a wagon train hauling all that gold from Mesoamerica is just unrealistic.

Hence, dimensional portal.

I just have to laugh every time I here that phrase in context of the plates. Can you imagine one of the 12 at some General Conference talking about the dimensional portal hidden at Hill Cumorah in New York.

Maybe the treasure guardian sinks it deeper into the earth anytime someone goes looking for it.

While he's about it he probably makes the bones and other battle artifacts sink as well - perhaps there's little extra effort required.

Which is why we can speculate and theorize and not necessarily have any relationship whatsoever to reality.

According to the Book of Mormon, he had several decades to do it. Could have been a little at a time and he could have stayed a while in various locations becomming part of the local population.

Highlander is basically a rip-off of the last parts of the Book of Mormon.

I wouldn't pay much attention to Simon. He doesn't know what he is talking about, and will say pretty much anything as long as he believes in the moment he says it that it will protect the LDS Church. But don't be mistaken: Simon is not lying; he is just so committed to protecting the Church that reality no longer comes into consideration, even when that reality pertains to what the Church itself has done or taught over the course of its history up to the present.

I think that this is probably the case for many apologists. The more I observe them, the more I reflect on what they do, and how they seem so convinced that they are being absolutely truthful when they say anything apologetic, the more convinced I become that this veil of polemical-apologetic parallel reality must be at play. Dedication to the cause shapes one's perceptions powerfully.

That is why criticism of the LDS Church is almost a total waste of time. As Jonathan Kay observed about conspiracy theorists, they will glom onto any trivial piece of data or minor unanswered question and cling to it like a life raft in order to preserve the conspiracy theory for themselves. They need it that badly. Mind you, I am not talking about Mormonism here. No, I am talking about the polemical-apologetic version of it, which is completely separable from actual faith in the actual LDS Church.
