Just got back from provo. What's been going on lately?

Has Dan chilled out yet? Last I heard, he threw a hissy fit for me calling John Gee and Matt Roper by their last names. Never mind that it isn’t uncommon for me to abbreviate names on message board forums, especially when posting from my cell phone.

Strange, though that Dan thinks he is in a position to lecture people on civility.

Why would Peterson ever object to folks calling others by their last names? He did it to Reed, after all.

A whole lot of drama, I guess.

I am so glad that I was able to see you while I was in Utah, Nightlion.

Hope you are well.

Doctor Scratch wrote:--Mike Reed was personally criticized by Jack Welch.

Actually... Dr. Welch didn't criticize my work. I critized his, and in reponse to the exchange we had in our seminar... Dr. Bushman suggested that I present on this topic instead of the one I had planned on.

Welch and I later talked and ironed things out (I thought).

Mortal Man wrote:I'd like to know why Midgley and Roper wouldn't sit with Gee. Is this evidence of a schism within the MI or was it part of the plan to bombard Mike from all corners of the room?

Rofl! Great point, Mortal Man. Is Gee so pissed off and cantankerous that it's impossible even to sit with him? I have to admit that the Mopologists' attitude towards Gee is strange. You never hear about him hanging out with the "crew," or about him getting invited to Bokovoy's BBQ feasts. So what's up with that?

And in all seriousness, I really do think there is something of a "schism" within the Maxwell Institute. I think that the key bit of evidence for this lies in the way that Will Schryver has been "handled." Whether or not his work is published by the M.I. will be a clear indication of which "faction" holds power....

ETA: Gee, what do you know? The moment I float the possibility of Jack Welch ordering a tactical strike against Mike Reed, both DCP and Hamblin are in spin mode and the MDD mods come in to shut the thread down. Lovely. Just lovely.

That just seems out of character from what we know about the teenage Joseph Smith. Rather, it sounds much more like the Joseph Smith of the 1830s, when he was in a much better position to obtain a book like this.

Why does this matter, Antley?

That's right! I forgot that this had initially been about something that you had disagreed with Professor Welch over. What happened again? Welch claimed that metal plates were not known in Joseph's day?

That is very interesting, since now we have been assured that, as the idea is present in the Bible, this is no big deal. Yet, Joseph Smith, according to people like Joseph Antley, had to have had a particular Bible Dictionary in the 1820s in order to have known about something Dr. Hamblin has "repeatedly" told everyone was in the Bible. Of course, Joseph Smith apparently did not know the Bible so well that he picked up the idea from there.

Anyway, I am glad that this was such a non-issue that Matt Roper and John Gee were able to hand you pertinent softball questions about your reliance on Hofmann forgeries for your sources in your "flawed" research and the like. Heaven knows how they would have reacted if this wasn't already old news and a non-issue to them!

The chill settles on any thread at MD&D, when the ominous moderator persona arrives to thunder his or her warnings from Mt. Olympus. I took that as my cue to leave, since I don't need to suffer their petty bull crap. Life is too short, and MD&D, like every other iteration of apologetic LDS board, is not only silly but dreary.

By the time I was done with it, Dr. Peterson had magically transformed my criticisms of John Gee's apologetic obfuscations into attacks on Dr. Peterson. I guess John Gee and Dr. Peterson are the same person in two different bodies, much like the Trinity is three persons of a single substance. I wish I had thought of that tactic first, really. I am envious. If only I could have turned their criticisms of Mike Reed into personal attacks on me! Clearly I am out of my depth.

Of course, I was in the wrong place to do that. I would have to be in a place where I am worshiped as a demi-god and protected like a Fabergé egg. A mere mortal like me can't hope to compete with that.
