Or you're using mindless hyperbole. One of the two.

Since agency does not mean the right to teach whatever you'd like when representing an organization I am going to go with the latter.

I asked my father the other day if he had seen the Joseph Smith Papers project site, explaining that it contained original documents produced by the Prophet. (He is a life long member, former bishop, member of a stake presidency, taught gospel doctrine for years etc.) His first question was "Is that an anti site?" The Church has trained its members so well in what is accepted and what is not that even material by Joseph Smith can be considered "anti".

Ahh yes you are correct Nehor it is "mindless hyperbole". I suppose my father is just an exception and that most members fell free to investigate and teach any aspect of the Church they want.

Room 101...

Post by _Eyepatch »

I agree that this is Orwellian. This toying with you is like O'brien's initial interrogations with Winston Smith. Be aware...it all leads to room 101 with rats waiting to eat your face off.

You've obviously seen behind the curtain...why even bother at all? They should be allowed to write their own stupid rule book. You have the option of simply leaving them to their petty devices. The day will soon come when there won't be anyone left, except for mouthbreathers who don't give a damn about the lesson content anyway.

Pretty sure comparing Christ's Church to public education in America is not the route to take here.

Pretty sure this is an irrelevant dodge. If one is Orwellian isn't the other as well? If not, why not?

This is easily testable. If Consig comes back after teaching this class and is either excommunicated or we never hear from him again then we know.

If not, then we know that everyone here spouting doomsday BS is full of it. Might I suggest we all watch and see. I'm guessing those who oppose me will slink off and never speak of this again. What do you think?

I love it when nonbelievers prophesy our doom.

Kind of how you put me on ignore after I thoroughly embarrassed you the other day? :)

Hey, I didn't predict doom, or that the church would disappear...only that it would be filled to the brim with mouthbreathers. I believe that this prophesy is coming true RIGHT NOW! :^)

Yeah, no.

Well Public Schools are notorious for pushing group think, enacting terrible policies, and teaching lopsided and scrubbed versions of history that leave out complicated and unflattering details. It’s a bulky inefficient top-down organization that seeks to quell most dissenters, and then promptly forgetting they ever existed once removed.

I have printed off cinepro's Church News article and also the Hugh B. Brown's commencement address, "An Eternal Quest--Freedom of the Mind."

Just comparing the tenor of the two is a remarkable exercise.

How far we have come in forty years.

And I went back and pulled Nibley's "An Approach to the Book of Mormon" off the shelf. I have the second edition. I was surprised by the author of the Forward. Joseph Fielding Smith, no less.

It is amazing that no less a doctor of orthodoxy as Joseph Fielding Smith could nevertheless whole-heartedly recommend Nibley's book to all priesthood holders in pre-correlation Mormonism.

All the Best!

Then your argument is that it's Orwellian that schoolteachers not be allowed to teach whatever the hell they want?

To be clear I'm more on Consig's side. I largely ignore manuals when I teach. But the idea that it is Orwellian is insane.

Oh, and by the logic of the Orwellian theorists here I should have been kicked out of the Church long ago rather then be stuck with two callings.

They're rolling this in like the WoW. You're tolerated for now but soon they'll deny you your temple recommend.
