He was arrested for heresy against the Church. You said "his imprisonment, such as it was, even by our standards today, was very, very lenient," but there are not many people (in Western cultures) imprisoned for heresy these days. So it was really not lenient by today's standards.

No, Freud's been out of vogue for several decades now. Thankfully, psychology has moved beyond mere projection of sexual fantasies to a more sophisticated mode of empirically-supported theorizing.

Hmmm...okay. No doubt he was arrested by the only authority that could. and, yes, it was for heresy. But to implicate the church as some monolithic ogre bent on destroying scientific discovery just isn't so. Not by this story anyway.

You're right that the story wasn't simple black and white. There were politics and rivalry and ego all involved. The Church was not monolithic as it vacillated between condemnation and support.
But the fact is that there was a ruling of heresy against Galileo and it was because of his scientific theories.

How Christlike.
Christ was the meanest son of a bitch to walk the planet. I call you a dumb ass he says I will fry your ass in hell forever for my own pleasure. he tells you to hate your mother. Who said I was a follower of him. I fear him that's about it.
Translation: We Christians are thankful that you Mormons are around so when the world calls us the stupidest people on the planet, we can point to someone I guess I'd better bow down to this Christ of yours, eh? I'm sure, he being a God and all that, he will fully realize that I am bowing to him because I truly, truly love him, and not at all because I'm scared of the explicit threat he is making about

Whatever appears to be against the Book of Mormon is going to be overturned at some time in the future. So we can be pretty open minded.-charity 3/7/07
MASH quotes I peeked in the back [of the Bible] Frank, the Devil did it. I avoid church religiously. This isn't one of my sermons, I expect you to listen.
While psychoanalysis had an influence on psychiatry and a lasting influence on the humanities, it never really was impactful on psychology. So, contra Cal, I don't think it makes sense to say psychology has moved passed it. That would imply it was taken by it in the first place. Psychology always has been far more Thorndike than Freud.
I'd also point out that altruism is a very sticky subject in phil of bio and evolutionary theory and isn't easily explained. There's also a couple different, mutually compatible ways explain why you get, specifically, warm fuzzy feelings - an emotional glow if you will - when helping others. And while I think we know a lot - about the amygdala and its role in regulating friend/foe responses for instance - there's enough to be uncovered that I'd be hesitant to say there's a good, complete answer out there. At least as far as I know.

Were you just giving me some information that seemed relative to my question?
It seems there were multiple answers to my question.

What has psychology moved to?

Can you describe this "warm fuzzy feeling". When does it occur, how long does it last, do you physically feel warmer than normally, what does the "fuzzy" mean..is it a physical response or a mental response or both.
I have no idea what anyone means with regards to "warm fuzzy feelings". The only time I hear of this is on Mormon related message boards. No one in my entire life has ever talked about getting a "warm fuzzy feeling". People talk about getting a buzz from drugs..but not a warm fuzzy feeling.
