This has significant implications for climate science because water vapour and clouds play a large role in determining global temperatures. Tiny changes in overall cloud cover can result in relatively large temperature changes.
Unsurprisingly, it's a politically sensitive topic, as it provides support for a "heliocentric" rather than "anthropogenic" approach to climate change: the sun plays a large role in modulating the quantity of cosmic rays reaching the upper atmosphere of the Earth.
Will this shift in causation herald no longer hearing that the melting icecaps are something made up by the liberal media? Can this heliocentric theory also be used in the eternal quest to avoid taxes and retrieve the Obama birth certificate?

Seriously, BCSpace? The Register is where you get your science news? Under Science (on August 27) they have the following headlines for some of their prime science coverage: Amphibious Nazi raccoons menace Sweden, Ofcom mulls smackdown for rogue religious TV channel, NASA to work on approved sci-fi books, and the ever-popular, Greyhound spatters Nashville with semen.

There are no "melting icecaps." This is fantasy, and that does not bode well for the credibility of those who make these kinds of bizarre and easily refuted claims.

There is no closed case. Mann, one of the most egregious scientific frauds in the history of modern Western science, was cleared of being a fox by other foxes. No news or shock to any of it. This has been hacked to pieces and laid to rest at Anthony Watt's site, Climate Audit, and by other climate scientists who still own their own souls.
This is all pathetically moot, in any case, as Mann's charlatanry was exposed upwards of ten years ago and the already intellectually perfidious IPCC ceased using the graph in its raw from in its Fourth Assessment Report (but incorporating it into its "spaghetti" diagram equally as "cooked"). We have long known exactly why the Hockey stick is flawed, as to both its construction from raw data and its filtering through Mann's now infamous computer algorithms.
The empirical facts of climate history (the MVP and LIA) that Mann's careful cherry picking of data and clever manipulation of computer code seemed to make disappear still remain as empirical facts, and have survived the assault of fevered ideology and oceans of government money.
