Agnostic's viewpoint

Post by _Buffalo »

I was talking to an agnostic recently. In explaining his agnosticism, he said something like this:

"If there's a God, then he/she appears be apathetic to events in our universe. All events in our Universe can be explained with or without the existence of a God. Therefore, if there is a God, then that he/she/it has had no more impact than no God at all. To all appearances, any purported higher power is totally indifferent to our universe and everyone in it."

Obviously I agree, but what do you think about his conclusion? Is there anything out there that can ONLY be explained by some sort of supreme being/mystical force/whatever?

That rather depends what you mean by 'explained', doesn't it? I can remember God being produced by the older generation as an excuse for not providing any further explanations.

Why should one not ask for an explanation of the explanation? I can't see why one should ever refrain from asking for more, so far as understanding is concerned.

That's the problem with this supernatural stuff, it doesn't really solve anything. It's a placeholder for ignorance.

No.

Of course, I don't think a supreme being explains anything any more than, "it's magic" explains anything. Either of those "explanations" sounds like code for, "How the hell do I know?"
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

I'm afraid we're going to need empirical evidence here, Stem.
