I had a good friend and his wife just return from a teaching stint in Japan, they really loved it, but it was a bit of a hassle to get (competitive).

Interesting. Were they in a big city or out in the country?

Perhaps Japan, Inc. is running out of money, so the jobs are fewer and farther between?

City. My guess is that the economic downturn (which hit college fresh grads the hardest) increased the competition and allowed the programs who offered spots in 1st world countries to be more picky.

Ah, they went with a program from the states.

It is much easier, but a little more frightening, to just drop in and find something on your own. But, those possibilities may have actually changed as well, what with the crappy economies, both in the states and in Japan.

Taiwan, S.Korea and China all have demand for English teachers. Korea is rather saturated because of the good pay and because a lot of organizations recruit people for that area.

Japan apparantly pays good, as well. China is easy to find work but I don't know whether they pay as much as Jap/Korea. A friend has been there for a bit but Facebook is blocked throughout the country, leaving me with squat to report. But wherever there are rich Asians who want to their kids to learn English there will be English teaching jobs.



----- ajax ----- I don't know how long ago you served in Colombia but when I was there visiting it seemed fine, except for a few incidents (don't take the night buses.....). Just stay in Bogota and the tourist areas to the North and you're fine. Of course the people in the tourist towns look at you like a walking cash grab. You have to learn to haggle and ask locals about prices or you'll spend 2x what you need to.
