Limited Geography Question

So I visited The Garden of Eden this past Sunday. Most will know it as Adam-Ohndi-Ahman. At said site were several placard placed there by the church recounting the significance of the site. One phrase caught my attention. This phrase was in reference to a particular location at the site called Tower Hill. The phrase in question reads as follows:

...Tower Hill is a name given by Joseph Smith because of the remains of an old Nephite altar (See History of the Church 3:35)...

This appears to be an official declaration made by the church about a Nephite altar being located in Western Missouri. How does this line up with the LG model?

If I recall correctly, the LG model is an apologetic device - the church, as an organization, takes no stance on the matter.
Also, If I recall correctly, apologists do not necessarily believe that Joseph Smith understood what he translated.

Anything published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? At least since 1988, the Church seems pretty open to the notion of an LGT.

My mistake. This is the place Adam and Even went to after leaving The Garden of Eden.

Now it is a pleasant thing to think of and to know where the Garden of Eden was. Did you ever think of it? I do not think many do, for in Jackson County was the Garden of Eden. Joseph has declared this, and I am as much bound to believe that as to believe that Joseph was a prophet of God.

The LGT is preposterous.

The Church has taken an "official stance" against a core element of that theory -- that is, the location of the Hill Cumorah. Many officials, including members of the FP, have stated that the ancient and modern Cumorah are one and the same; in particular, these statements were made in the general conference immediately following the purchase of the Hill Cumorah. And, the most heavily cited doctrinal treatise used in General Conference, still in publication, Doctrines of Salvation, comes out specifically and cleanly against that element of the LGT.

The Church has not commented upon the location of other items, such as Zarahemla or the narrow neck of land

But, a Nephite altar in Missouri is not inconsistent with the Sorenson heresy.

So the opening post basically browbeats believers and the Church with the Sorenson heresy. One of the great weaknesses of Mormon apologia is that they almost all to a person sign on to this heresy.
