just me wrote:I don't see anything unclear about this passage. It reads very straight forward. In fact, it is supposed to be a quote of God talking. Shouldn't God speak clearly and simply? If he meant you will become mortal then he could easily have said "you will become mortal." Again, becoming mortal and being told you will die are two different things.

This discussion reminds me of a trenchant observation made many years back on the MAD Board by a poster named alpha--"The only unbreakable scripture is the one with which we agree."

I liked it so much I made it my signature for a while.

Would you accept that the Bible is plain and clear that God lied to Adam and Eve?

If not, why not?

It is not yet time for you to go, Grasshopper.

Numbers 23:19

“What did the LORD say?”

18 Then he spoke his message:

“Arise, Balak, and listen;
hear me, son of Zippor.
19 God is not human, that he should lie,
not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;
he has blessed, and I cannot change it.

1 Samuel 15: 27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, and it tore. 28 Samuel said to him, “The LORD has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you. 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie or change his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

Hebrews 6:18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

Again, becoming mortal and being told you will die are two different things.

I seems to me they are exactly the same thing.

Any way to approach it, God was being deceptive. Or, more charitably, perhaps he was just mistaken.

No, just the way you and others choose to read it.

To what are you referring? I don't recall God writing anything. Or are you worried that people here have forgotten how little you really know about this and you wanted to remind them.
