Good thing most of you are from a solid Mormon background, otherwise you might have a betting pool as to when this new Student Review will be quashed.

I'm not sure it'll ever be "quashed" so much as it'll likely just fizzle out. One of the editors tweeted that he hand-delivered a copy of the Review to Cecil O. Samuelson today.

Will his reaction serve as a litmus test for acceptability?

I'm certain he will have no public reaction and that the university will succinctly ignore the new paper.

Of course everyone is a conformist to some extent. If not, you will find yourself living behind bars for most of your life.
How does your question relate to the OP or to academic freedom issues at BYU?

Why should a student newspaper with a bunch of enthusiastic people behind it, and with an open market before it with no competition, 'fizzle out'? You don't seem to think much of BYU students.
Lots of campuses have successful papers of this kind. Why should BYU be any different?

sugarcoated? more like superficial. actually, that doesn't even express how unsubstantial it was. the closest it comes to substance is [this just in!]: "Many early Latter-day Saint were Masons, including Joseph Smith and other Church leaders."

Re: BYU students resurrect Student Review as independent voice
I went to BYU when the Student Review was popular and I was acquainted with a couple staff members through friends. I read a few articles and while better than The Daily Universe, I can't say I found the paper to be terribly engaging. One problem with being Mormon enough to find oneself at BYU in the first place is that rebelling becomes difficult to do. I remember, like Joseph, thinking the staff I had met were poseurs and that the paper tried too hard to be sassy.
I think that the brethren know what they are doing. A very close family member is friends with Merrill Bateman, and conversations that were relayed to me between the two suggested that any serious attempts of subversive behavior at BYU would never see the light of day.
I think that Joseph is being taken by a rigged match. Now by that, I don't mean that the Student Review folks were approached through a GA to resurrect the paper. But, I do believe in the upper echelons somewhere a gentleman's bet or two has been made; will the paper fizzle out because there are too many stalwarts uninterested in the publication or will the paper continue to circulate, inadvertently fulfilling the agenda of the establishment as a "show trial" of sorts?
Keep in mind, BYU -- at least at that time -- actually kept all books deemed "anti-Mormon" locked in their shelves at BYU library and you had to get special permission to check them out.
Now, if somehow I were able to work out a deal with the Student Review administration to take on Doctor Scratch for six months as a consultant, then the paper would be squashed and the staff threatened with expulsion and excommunication.

Because 1) the paper does have very strong competition; 2) the paper is not directly available on campus; 3) the paper has a history of providing superficial and non-substantial articles; and 4) the paper has fizzled out in the past.
You don't seem to think much of BYU students.
Yes, obviously I think that all BYU students are morons.

I'd love to think that your appraisal of it's chances were true, Chap. Unfortunately, the paper is written and published by BYU students who are under the complete authority of BYU administration. Even their star Basketball player was suspended for having a little beard stubble.
If some bright group of students (who would remain anonymous) could publish a paper, printed and distributed off campus, it would be heartwarming and successful. The trouble is that any students brave and rebellious enough to do that are most likely attending the University of Utah, instead.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.
