Morley stated:
Which is different from education making students more liberal. There is also an increase in binge drinking among those who attend college. The reason may not be the increased educational opportunities.

What do you think university education offers students? “Binge drinking” is quite irrelevant to the context here of the link between education and liberalization. Many things happen in universities which may or may not be directly linked to the expansion of perspective for students. For many the university experience is a 24-7 experience. Not ALL of it is directly related to their minds being opened to new perspectives or new understandings which lead to a higher level of education.

The principle which Buffalo has established (unless he opposes this conclusion) is that education TENDS to make individuals more liberal in their views. People die in college from overdosing on drugs. But that’s not the majority of students nor is it the intent and focus of the educational institution.

In short, your reference to “binge drinking” is quite irrelevant to the issue of how education at a secular university level influences students who ultimately graduate from those secular universities.

The point is students themselves, in their free time, aren't pressuring each other to be liberal. They're getting laid and drinking and cramming and playing Xbox and taking ski holidays. Not pressuring each other to vote for Nader.

They may or may not be. Not my argument.

Have you read all that I've written in this thread? I'm not making the argument you seem to think I'm making.

Where else are these kids pickup up liberalism in college, other than in the classroom? College football? Dorm parties? Anything?

Morley,

In your last paragraph which Buffalo quotes, you appear to hold an idea of single cause for something like liberal mentality/thinking. .....

You are misreading me. Profoundly.

Please review the thread.

I just read what you put on the screen. I don’t read minds.

In reality, they may or may not even be becoming more 'liberal.'

The USA is more educated than it was during FDR's administration. It is not more liberal than it was during that administration.

JAK, I'm arguing against assigning any single cause for liberalism. Even increased education.

Buffalo stated:
I also think that, the extent to which people become liberalized through education is also dependent on their personalities. There have been a lot of studies linking certain personality traits to liberalism or conservatism.

Yes, of course. Without question, there are those who go through a secular university and never really think critically about their own beliefs. In addition to your correct observation is the fact that certain majors may give little or no encouragement toward intellectual curiosity. What people choose for major study is also likely influenced by “certain personality traits.”

If one majors in psychology or science (most any division), his/her opportunity to have that intellectual curiosity is likely to be greater than a major in some other subjects.

I'm also suggesting that generalizations about 'liberalism' in the academe are not necessarily useful or accurate.
