Simon, you can't even be sure if you really exist. There's no threat there - you might disappear any day in a puff of logic!

In Judaism, have you ever attended a bar mitzvah or a briss?

The LDS temple is the only place where any type of symbolism or ceremony occurs. But put into perspective of other religions, I really don't see it, particularly in its current form, as being anymore negative to society at large than any other type of deeply religious symbolic ceremony.
My emphasis.

I participated in my grandson's briss. I don't remember any roleplay. I can't recall roleplay any in the Catholic rites I've witnessed. Perhaps I was missing something.

I also don't see the temple ceremony as negative. Silly and extremely pretentious? Perhaps.

Hello,

I have an apple in front of me right now. I can't be sure if this apple exists, or if it's Mr. Simon.

Regardless, I wish neither existed.

When we attend the temple, we aren't pretending either.

Except we are.
For all times except the very first, we are pretending we are someone else...

That's a statement of protection.

The same as saying "The thought of a grizzly bear makes me wish that my assault rifle weren't in my neighbor's gun safe." That doesn't mean I want to seek out and destroy all grizzly bears -- just that I want to protect myself and my family.
