Help with some references

Post by _RockSlider »

Apparently, someone spoke in GC yesterday about what in the world should TBM’s call themselves (well not TBM, NOM, Cafeteria etc.). Anyway, six of my active family was watching GC at the house, with me in the other room playing Brink. Between session, I made the mistake of trying to join their conversation about this important topic.

Anyway, somehow we ended up down the line of the correlated gospel, and I made some statement about the Joseph, no alcohol, and the leg incident, and how Joseph was known to drink after that great story. Well not a one of them would even consider this blasphemy, and demanded proof.

I’ve seen some good information on this in the past, but goggling around I’m unable to find it again. Does anyone know of any reliable source material on this topic?

Thanks

The reason Joseph felt convicted of sin and sought repentance for acting out of character for one who had seen God was his dipping into the liquor barrel as a teenager. This set up the Moroni encounters. I am not sure if Lucy Mack Smith's book tells this or where I remember that from. sorry. maybe google wiskey barrel joseph smith Palmyra will catch it.

As the FAIR wiki points out, History of the Church talks about Joseph Smith drinking wine at Carthage Jail.

http://www.fairwiki.org/Mormonism_and_h ... _the_facts

Joseph and others drank wine at Carthage. This fact is presented without apology in Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7 volumes, edited by Brigham H. Roberts, (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1957), 6:616.

"Before the jailor came in, his boy brought in some water, and said the guard wanted some wine. Joseph gave Dr. Richards two dollars to give the guard; but the guard said one was enough, and would take no more.

The guard immediately sent for a bottle of wine, pipes, and two small papers of tobacco; and one of the guards brought them into the jail soon after the jailor went out. Dr. Richards uncorked the bottle, and presented a glass to Joseph, who tasted, as also Brother Taylor and the doctor, and the bottle was then given to the guard, who turned to go out. When at the top of the stairs some one below called him two or three times, and he went down." (emphasis added)

There is also a place in the History of the Church where Joseph Smith talks about how much he loves drinking at wedding celebrations. LOL Not in those exact words. I'll see if I can find it today.

Thanks all, that fair wiki reference on Carthage should be one that they can not simply write off as from an anti-mormon site.

So he dipped into the whiskey barrel and saw Moroni. That must have been good whiskey.
I'm the apostate your bishop warned you about.

"Drank a glass of beer at Moissers," reads an entry in Joseph Smith's manuscript diary in reference to Frederick G. Moesser's "grog shop," which Joseph had condemned in a sermon on Aug 12, 1843. When the manuscript history is published as HISTORY OF THE CHURCH this sentence is omitted without indication. (5)
