The Book of Mormon versus Mormonism

Post by _daheshism »

The Book of Mormon teaches Evangelical Christianity. OneGod only. Mary a literal virgin after she bares Jesus. Endless misery of Hell. One must be "born again" in order to become a son/daughter of God. Polygamy and concubinage condemned.

Jacob 2:24 “Behold, David and Solomon truly had many wives and concubines, which thing was abominable before me, saith the Lord.”

And how this appears to conflict with D&C 132:1 which states: “Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you my servant Joseph, that inasmuch as you have inquired of my hand to know and understand where in I, the Lord, justified my servant Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, as also Moses, David, and Solomon, my servants, as touching the principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines

D&C 132 was never published until 1852.

The Book of Mormon teaches Evangelical Christianity

Not in the least. For example, the Book of Mormon does not say how the Father and Son are one, but the Bible and D&C do and it so happens that plurality of Gods is alive and well. What's nice about the LDS Church is that they take all verses into account in context rather than picking one or two to the exclusion of all others.

LDS certainly believe in one God and being born again and the virgin birth. Not in the evangelical sense, but in the scriptural sense.

Bcspace, surely a more accurate statement would have been "the CURRENT AMENDED VERSION of the Book of Mormon does not say how the Father and Son are one..."

I doubt it.

You're right. It teaches Methodism, which is really quite different from the Evangelical movement.

The Book of Mormon teaches Evangelical Christianity.

Not in the least. For example, the Book of Mormon does not say how the Father and Son are one, but the Bible and D&C do and it so happens that plurality of Gods is alive and well.

DARRICK: Yes....the Book of Mormon teaches Evangelical Christianity, and NOT Mormonism!!! The Book of Mormon does say how the Father and the Son are one. It says in Mosiah chapter 15 that the Father is Spirit and the Son is flesh, and they are "one God". Mormonism teaches they are "two Gods". The "Plurality of Gods" is mentioned in the D&C, but in the original D&C (published in the time of Jospeh Smith) there was no plurality of Gods mentioned. Brigham Young "changed" it to read a plurality of Gods. The 1835 makes no mention of a plurality of Gods.

What's nice about the LDS Church is that they take all verses into account in context rather than picking one or two to the exclusion of all others.

DARRICK: The Book of Mormon contradicts the post-Joseph Smith D&C, because Brigham Young ordered "changes" in the D&C after they got to Utah.

LDS certainly believe in one God and being born again and the virgin birth. Not in the evangelical sense, but in the scriptural sense.

DARRICK: I was an active Mormon from 1979 to 1989, I served a mission. I NEVER HEARD EVEN ONE TIME for any Mormon leader that I needed to be "born again". Never. Not once! I was told hundreds if not thousands of times that I needed to "follow the Brethren" and "keep the commandments" if I wanted to be Exalted. I heard NOT ONE WORD about having to be "born again" in General Conference, in priesthood meetings, nor in Sunday School, or Institute. NOT ___ONE___ WORD!

Do Mormons believe in the virgin birth? Many younger ones probably do, but only because Mormon leaders have not taught otherwise in recent years.
You may be too young to remember the "God had sex with Mary" teachings. Every single Mormon male I knew when I was a young Mormon taught me that God the Father "stepped down" from His throne and "joined" with His spirit-daughter Mary and "begot" Jesus in the "exact same way" that a mortal man begets a son. This was taught in "Mormon Doctrine" by Bruce R. McConkie, which every Mormon I knew had a copy of. This was taught by Brigham Young, Joseph F. Smith, Joseph Fielding Smith, and most other Mormon leaders. Joseph Smith never taugh this. The Book of Mormon calls Mary a "virgin" both before and after the conception of Jesus, and that Jesus was begotten by the Holy Ghost. This contradicts Mormon teachings from Brigham Young to just recently. What "Mormon Doctrine" is contantly changes.
