Mormons like the feeling that they are superior and want to show people that they are right.
Even if true that is very much the impression that many of the critic posters here give off. Probably, again, not a Mormon thing, so much as a cultural thing.
Sadly, we developed many of the traits you dislike so much in us in our days as believing Mormons. :(

bcspace, were those recent directives in writing? Were they, for example, in the Ensign? Can you provide links?
Sure. It's pretty common counsel these days actually. Come to a Stake Conference sometime and you'll likely hear it from the visiting GA. One that comes to mind that's been published would be:
“There are conversations going on about the Church constantly. Those conversations will continue whether or not we choose to participate in them. But we cannot stand on the sidelines while others, including our critics, attempt to define what the Church teaches. While some conversations have audiences in the thousands or even millions, most are much, much smaller. But all conversations have an impact on those who participate in them. Perceptions of the Church are established one conversation at a time.”
I also think it is driven by a Mormons need to bolster a weakening testimony. The more vehement the Mopologist the weaker the self-confidence is apparent in their own testimony.
Considering how long I've been posting on the subject, surely I'd be a flaming apostate by now with this logic? One might be tempted bring up my support for evolution and disagreement with universal flood doctrine, but besides the fact that I have proven evolution can swim with LDS doctrine, I've held those views since well before the internet existed.

I appreciate your concern, but it's the donut that's in danger of disintegration, not my head. I've already seen it happen to other donuts that got too close.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Yes, but the fact that it has a Roche limit implies that it is composed of something far more dense than brain cells. Hence the worry....
I think if you google this topic with Elder Ballard you will find even more. It seems to have been an important subject for him the last few years.
Cheers.
Thank you, J Green. In light of Ballard's urge, do you participate more in online discussions of Mormonism than you would if Ballard had not made that urge? Are there times when you exercise self-discipline to come online and 'fight the good fight' when maybe you'd rather not?
Do you know anyone that has been specifically singled out and asked by upline church authority to go online to defend Mormonism?
