Racist Teachings Make me Sick

Post by _just me »

So tired of the racism in the church. Members don't even realize that it is racist.

Story told today about a "Lamanite" family (South American) who had 9 children. Well, lo and behold each child born after they joined the church was "lighter" than the last until their youngest was born looking "white."

Those Lamanites are blossoming like the rose. It is visible in their skin pigmentation.

BFF,

That's not just sickening, it's delusional. How many black members are listening to this drivel and wondering why their children aren't being born with lighter skin? How many cauc. members are looking at that family and judging them?

I'm sorry, if I heard such a thing in church, my hand would go up and I would respond in protest asking the same questions I just posed.

Oh and this, too. There is NOTHING that would make me stay in a church that teaches this sort of thing. I'd be grabbin' up the kids and walking out, never to return.

Jesus, Joseph and Mary! What nonsense. If you haven't heard the Michael Coe podcasts from Mormon Stories yet, go listen to them. Dr. Coe makes a great argument about how this type of thinking robs indigenous peoples of their heritage by replacing it with one of Old World Euro-centric origin.

Sheesh, I hadn't even thought of that yet!

What if you'd been raised your whole life to believe that it was true?

In that case, I wouldn't know the difference and would likely stay.

This excuse can only go so far. At some point, one interacts with the broader world around them and discovers that this type of teaching is racist simply by contrasting current belief with the belief of those around them. Culpability takes over from that point.
