People are raised to believe many things. However, I have never heard anyone make such comments in church. And if they did, they would have been challenged by other members. Here we have a case of a person making a comment or teaching something, and then suddenly an entire church is condemned. Amazing just amazing.

Why Me,

What's amazing is what you've never heard during your career in the church. You must be sleeping on the job. Wake up!

Oh my God. Can I tell you how many times priesthood leaders claimed to get up and speak by the power of the Holy Ghost and proclaim things which you've not heard? I don't think you are a very good Mormon. You sleep at the wheel, sir.

Mormonism is a church of Mormons. Hear what the Mormons have to say.

So a bunch of women got together and talked about how mexicans become white collared Mormons. And you sat there and watched tears in the eyes of several people as they heard such things. Now come on Just Me, you must think that I am stupid. Something is missing in your story. So far, I see nothing in your posts that would bring a tear to my eye from such stories. I may be thinking of an IQ problem but not much else.

The only person with a possible IQ problem is you, whyme. Though in your case I don't think its so much a lack of intelligence as a lack of manners. What is up with your constant trolling?

Nearly every time you post I have the impression that you never went to church much, so consistently are you wrong about what meetings are like and what is discussed there and in what kind of atmosphere.

Just me recounted the kind of anecdotal smarminess that is standard ward tear jerker fare. Ditto the particular kind of racism involved. I suspect many of us here have had similar experiences, especially those of us from the Kimball era. Back in my day, families used to have "adopted" Lamanite children who lived with them during the school year. It was often said, both casually and in Sunday School classes that you could "see" how these children were actually turning whiter over the months they lived with their host families.

Maybe nothing like that was ever said in that one ward in NYC which you attended a couple of times in the 70's. But your admittedly partial encounter with Mormonism is not an accurate account of the lived culture that has shaped many of our lives.

You have some weird jones for trolling this board, whyme. I mean SEVEN POSTS in a row saying the exact same incorrect and condescending thing?

Which of the 39 steps, Droopy, is JSJr now on?

Just for fun, here is more context from our class. I only highlighted what upset me most. There were other random things taught (maybe I'll do another post).

The lesson was Signs of the Second Coming number 43.

In the end of the lesson they talked about the gospel being brought to all nations and the Lamanites "blossoming as the rose."

This is what the manual says:

Lehi’s Descendants Will Become a Great People
The Lord said that when His coming was near, the Lamanites would become a righteous and respected people. He said, “Before the great day of the Lord shall come, … the Lamanites shall blossom as the rose” (D&C 49:24). Great numbers of Lehi’s descendants are now receiving the blessings of the gospel.

This is when one sister got choked up and said it was very near and dear to her heart because her son is on a mission to the Lamanites...in Argentina.

The teacher spoke several times about those who are from "Spanish speaking" countries, them being Lamanites. She also specified Mexicans because we have a Spanish branch that her and her husband workk very closely with (he is in the stk presidency). How wonderful it is to see them embrace the gospel and go from jeans to...well, looking like American Mormon's. She struggled with how to say it, but the intent was clear.

Ok, then she told us about this family that were Lamanite/S.Am. and had 9 children. She said that after they joined the church each baby that was born was lighter skinned than the last. The last baby was "just as white" as a caucasian and they called it their "little Nephite."

There. That is the context.

I considered saying how racist that was, but did not know how to without causing a stink and drawing attention to myself. How do you tell someone that the racist story they just told to 30 women...who all believe it is true....is racist? I couldn't figure out how. I'm also non-confrontational in real life.

Meaning that they are not a righteous and respected people beforehand. You don't "become" something that you already are.

why me is proof that Mormonism is more palatable, actually a blank canvas on which you can draw anything, if you simply do not attend its meetings.

But you said nothing. You see Just Me, class is not just teacher/student but also student/teacher. It is a conversation and you could have said something. By sitting silently and allowing people to say such things, you are more guilty then the people who made such comments. You knew better and no stink needed to show itself.

And besides, you are creating a stink here, right?

Well, you see, here we have Jersey Girl actually believing that in the manual or in official LDS teaching that racism is being taught. No such thing is happening. And Just Me just proved it. The gospel makes people blossom like a rose: something beautiful. No racism there.

What people say is what people say. But one can engage people when they say it and make a comment. And that was my point.

why me, why don't you attend all LDS meetings in the LDS ward in which you live, for an entire month, and come back and report what you've learned about what is taught, what is not, what the LDS culture of that ward is, etc? You might learn something.

And this is standard christianity. One must be saved in Christ. No problem there. And they weren't respected when the D and C verse was written. In fact, the indians continued to be driven westward until they ended up on a reservation or killed. No problem there.
