Buffalo wrote:Beyond this example, you have to admit the "I'm a Mormon" ads showcase atypical Mormons engaged in behaviors and often with appearances that have been discouraged for decades. Now the church is holding up people who were less obedient as good examples of Mormons. It's only natural that faithful Mormons should take offense to that. The church will throw them under the bus at the drop of a hat.

Personally, I find the "I am an ex-Mormon" videos to be more real and touching.

I can relate better and feel the joy and happiness they express in being out of the church far greater than anything in the "I'm a Mormon" ads. I almost feel as if the "I'm a Mormon" ads were created in an effort reassure members that they are normal and to keep them in the church, as opposed to recruiting new members.
Red flags look normal when you're wearing rose colored glasses.

He is also saying that Consig should tell his wife that her feelings and reaction to the video are invalid and wrong.

Consig is also being told to apologize to the HT and maybe his wife. I have no idea what he is supposed to apologize for. Perhaps why me could clarify that.

Thank goddess Consig is a smart, kind man and will not take the misguided and sexist advice of why me.

The video in question shows a single woman with a job. His wife's reaction was not based in fact. Why jump to conclusions? Also, Mormon women have been always working outside the home. It is a matter of choice. My exwife worked outside the home. No problem for the LDS church. She stayed home for the first three years and then went to work. No problem.

What does Consig need to apologize for, in your opinion?

But the "choice" has always been framed as one of being a faithful Mormon by following the prophet.

You know that.

Putting off marriage and children to earn money outside the home? You have never heard the church talk about this? You really are inactive aren't you?

For the reaction of his wife. Put yourself in the home teacher's shoes. It was probably not a comfortable situation to be in. The home teacher conveyed the content of a video about a urban teacher who finds joy in the inner city only to get a reaction that made no sense to the context of what the HT said.

Don't worry. Consiglieri probably waited until they were in private to slap that woman around for speaking when not spoken to.

MsJack wrote:Daughters in My Kingdom contains an entire chapter heavily focused on how women should be stay-at-home moms and homemakers: Chapter 9, "'Guardians of the Hearth': Establishing, Nurturing and Defending the Family."

Published last month.

From "Daughters in My Kingdom":

Relief Society leaders have always spoken out against efforts to weaken the traditional family and demean the sacred roles of wife and mother. Sister Amy Brown Lyman, the eighth Relief Society general president, emphasized the need for mothers to be with their children. She served as president during World War II, a time when government and civic leaders encouraged women to work outside the home to support their national economies while their husbands were at war. Some sisters needed to work outside the home to provide the necessities of life for their families. Although Sister Lyman acknowledged these challenges, she nevertheless encouraged women to do all they could to be at home and teach their children.

Sister Lyman’s messages were consistent with the teachings of the First Presidency, who reminded Church members of the “sacred dedication” of motherhood.31 President Heber J. Grant, the seventh President of the Church, and his counselors, Presidents J. Reuben Clark Jr. and David O. McKay, declared:

“Motherhood is near to divinity. It is the highest, holiest service to be assumed by mankind. It places her who honors its holy calling and service next to the angels. To you mothers in Israel we say God bless and protect you, and give you the strength and courage, the faith and knowledge, the holy love and consecration to duty, that shall enable you to fill to the fullest measure the sacred calling which is yours. To you mothers and mothers-to-be we say: Be chaste, keep pure, live righteously, that your posterity to the last generation may call you blessed.”32

Actually this is not true. It has always been a choice and a recommendation. When I was in NYC, attending the ward there even back in the 1970's, women were working and they were also moms. Some were working in the opera or in business. And yes, some stayed home. For those moms who were working, nothing bad was said of them. There were no problem with working outside the home.

And in Europe, with state financed day care, many Mormon women were working because many women in society were working. To be a stay at home mom basically meant that your child would have no friends during the early years since many children were put in day care and women were encouraged to work by the state.

However, I would say that children today would be less screwed up if moms knew how to be moms and raised their children in the home. In the 50's and in the 60's many women were stay at home moms whether Mormon or not and my friends had mothers who were home for them after school. No need for day care, just visits over friends homes and outdoor games.
I intend to lay a foundation that will revolutionize the whole world.
