For the most part, I don't buy this.
Now, for those in actual poverty, yes, tithing can be a problem.
However, I firmly believe that those Mormons struggling with debt would be the first in line at the BestBuy credit desk to get a new 64" flat screen if the prophet came out today and said tithing was no longer required. Hell, that's 10% more money they could spend a month!

People say stupid crap about me all the time on this board. I don't understand why it should affect me in the least. Nobody knows me.
Way to completely miss the point.
I think a person has to have a serious problem to be influenced by off-the-cuff speculations of strangers.
/sigh I don't care what anybody says about Holland. The point here is that he DID equate Holland as someone who has a problem with porn and that isn't gonna fly at MDD. That's all.

Shoot, Buffalo, I don't know how to be more clear. Your study is looking at one thing--it is not some conclusive piece that proves there are more porn patronizers overall among Mormons or the politically conservative. It says in those areas more people pay for on-line porn. And? There are far too many holes for you to fill to draw the conclusions you reach, but you reach them because they help to favor your dislike for others.
Love ya tons, Stem
I ain't nuttin'. don't get all worked up on account of me.

I don't think Utah Mormons are any more materialistic than the average American. If not for the Church's selling of salvation at a cost of 10% of gross income, Utah would not have the debt problems it does.

I don't dislike conservatives or red staters, Stem. Most of my family fits that description. But that IS what the research suggests. I know you don't like that information, but you can be brave and accept it instead of sticking your head in the sand and pretending it's not there.

I don't think that is true, Buff. THe church encourages marriage at a very young age. It also encourages not putting off babies for worldly reasons. Getting married before completing an education and starting to have babies right away cause a great deal of financial hardship on LDS couples.
There is a lot more to it than tithing.
ETA: More kids are more money, too.

I just don't see 10% as the difference of bankruptcy or not.

Well, it's not 10% of the money they have, it's 10% before taxes and rent and student loan payments and car payments and hospital bills.
Last year, for example, our tithing amounted to 100% of our net income.

Really now. So what was your point if not to demonstrate what it would be like to have someone make negative speculative comments about me? Please, share the grand yet obscure point you were making that I obviously missed.
(I agree on one thing... someone's missing the point).

Holy “F”, man... No, he didn't. He said he wondered about it, and he said it with numerous qualifiers.
But far be it from me to trample on yours and MDD's right to be offended.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.
