Because they have to shell out ridiculous sums each time an attorney asks to see the books. That is an exorbitant but necessary expenditure to keep the records sacred.
1) Abusers of any kind (child, spouse, or whatever) are a danger to others and should never be covered up.
2) I fail to see why having the church involved in scouting is any more dangerous than having the church drop scouting and only engage in its own youth programs. The church only calls leaders among those in the congregation, and generally makes assignments, not requests for volunteers. Furthermore, the current rules for scouting specifies that an adult is never to be alone with children.
3) I like many things about scouting--even now as an adult leader. However, I do not like how it's in the middle of a political / cultural war what with the banning of homosexuals and atheists. A private organization has the right to do as it pleases, but I really don't think that such things should be considered when (as I see it) the ultimate goal of scouting is to teach boys how to be responsible leaders and to have fun doing it.
I also dislike how much money certain scouting officials make while the rest of us volunteer our time and money. Therefore I think the church should drop scouting and use its own program as it does for the young women.
