However, the fact that it was published by Bookcraft speaks volumes about its lack of official support.

The fact that President McKay and many members of the Quorum of the Twelve were furious at its publication says a lot. But he was family and occurances predicted in Murphy's Laws still happen.

Wish there could be a name change for this book to McConkie Doctrine.

A contribution from the official website of the Church may be in order...

Elder McConkie is best known and loved among Church members for his sermons and writings on doctrinal subjects—his encyclopedic work, Mormon Doctrine, covering over 1,100 gospel subjects;
Elder Bruce R. McConkie: “Preacher of Righteousness” Ensign June 1985

Doesn't officially sound as though the Church has anything but admiration for BRM's encyclopedia of Mormon doctrine.

That article has no author. (see http://LDS.org/ensign/1985/06?lang=eng)

It is interesting, isn't it?

In his report into 'Mormon Doctrine' Marion G Romney said this to Prophet David O'McKay.

The author is an able and thorough student of the gospel. In many respects he has produced a remarkable book. Properly used, it quickly introduces the student to the authorities on most any gospel subject.

Clearly false. The statement 'Benzene is an aromatic hydrocarbon' is true, but you won't find it in any official publications of the Church. But thanks for bumping this.

Yea, it's kind of like the COB rejected it (1958) before it became doctrine as it was published by the LDS Church (1999-2010). Reminds me of John Kerry explaining his 2003-2004 votes to fund the Iraq war--he voted for the funding before he voted against it. Only here, McKay rejected MD before the Church later publised it. One might say that the 1st and 2nd Editions do not pass the muster of doctrine, but that the 3rd Edition does.

It was never published by the Church which is the standard for doctrine.

Says who?

The Church itself for many decades now through various channels such as the Teacher preparation class and it's manual Teaching, No Greater Call. The various parts of which have been recently summarized:

Not every statement made by a Church leader, past or present, necessarily constitutes doctrine. A single statement made by a single leader on a single occasion often represents a personal, though well-considered, opinion, but is not meant to be officially binding for the whole Church. With divine inspiration, the First Presidency (the prophet and his two counselors) and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles (the second-highest governing body of the Church) counsel together to establish doctrine that is consistently proclaimed in official Church publications. This doctrine resides in the four “standard works” of scripture (the Holy Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price), official declarations and proclamations, and the Articles of Faith. Isolated statements are often taken out of context, leaving their original meaning distorted.
Approaching Mormon Doctrine

Look, we all get that you are embarrassed by certain teachings of the people you revere as prophets, seers and revelators....I find it hilarious that you have to create some outlandish mental construct and ridiculous rules in order to justify the stupidity that your "prophets" spew forth...Please, continue with your ridiculous rationalizations - we are definitely laughing at you, not with you....

I'm simply going by what the Church itself says about it's own doctrine.

I think it's fair to say that "Mormon Doctrine" cannot be classed in and of itself as Mormon doctrine. However, it's content is obviously all about Mormon doctrine and so "Mormon Doctrine" can be said to contain Mormon doctrine along Bruce's explanation of it.

The Church, in my opinion, should produce a compendium of Mormon doctrine that is additional to that which is contained within the four standard works. Wait...shouldn't that be what the Doctrine & Covenants is for?
