That’s an important distinction. In support of that position, boards which attract intolerant individuals also attract “name calling” as a substitute for challenging a position with countervailing facts and evidence.

I consider name calling and personal attacks to be hostile. Those go on here far too much, in my opinion. Attacking ideas and doctrines and practices are fair game. Of course, calling someones idea "stupid" is pretty much going to be received the same as if you called the person stupid and we just had a thread about that not too long ago. It shuts down communication.

I also see things called out as "hostile" that really aren't.

There are three posters on that list who have made me feel uncomfortable with their hostility, yet all are partners in the human race. Others on that list have made me smile even if we would disagree on some issues.

I think this could be true if we consider the aggregate consensus of present board participants (anent theism) to be equivalent to The Board's position anent theism. I don't think that's an odd metric to apply at any particular time.

But, that appears to be an accidental feature of The Board, at least on Shade's vision.

On civility. For myself (not to you, Stak), I'd rather have someone say to my (digital) face, "Your beliefs are stupid" than to be be patronized, my interlocutor saying to himself, "I need to treat this guy with kid gloves because he's semi-moronic."

That said, I don't participate here much, so I could be misreading the whole thing.

I know that you are being sarcastic, but I must note my disagreement with this characterization (albeit a sarcastically made one). Despite bcspace's anticipated claims to the contrary notwithstanding, I think every TBM and defender shaves some parts off of his or her own brand of Mormonism. I do not think it is humanly possible to accept any religious dogma "lock, stock and barrel", much as many try to do just that.

I think that all are hypocrites, then, to some degree. I like to reserve the term hypocrite for something much more clear and palpable. So I guess there is a residue of the New Testament in my thinking.

IMHO, this board is no more hostile to LDS posters than any group of rational people who don't believe in nonsense would appear to any other group who do believe in nonsense, and are willing to defend their unfounded beliefs in public.

It is as simple as that.

Translation: any hostile behavior towards the Latter-day Saints is okay, because, well, they're wrong.
