Is Persecution Complex taught?

Post by _hobo1512 »

Is it me, or has anyone noticed that at some point and time in every conversation, 99 % of Mormon posters will play the persecution card?

I've noticed it here as well as a couple of other boards, including MDD.

I've noticed it almost always involves bearing their testimony at the same time.

Does LDS central teach this? Why is it so consistent with Mormon posters? Don't they realize it gets old very quick, and is almost totally ineffective anymore?

Institute is practically a treatise on how bad off the poor Mormons had it. At least, the one I took was.

Oh yeah. Any course on pioneer history is persecution complex 101.

Hey hobo,

This ought to be an interesting thread (We shall see?)

I'm not sure that it is "taught"? Perhaps it is?

In my experience (The great majority of said experience being these LDS message boards) the persecution complex is a very, very common practice used among LDS people.

It seems to me that it is indeed a default position of seeking comfort that many, many utilize far to often, in my opinion. (I am sure there are several reasons for this). I also believe that the "persecution" (as many of the members propose it to be) is seen as a place of common ground (even protection of sorts) among, and to unite with their brethren.

One need look no further than some of the threads on this very board to see examples of this.

Anyway, just my take.

Look forward to seeing how this thread evolves.

Peace,

It's effectiveness is measured within the LDS community where history is used as an means not an end unto itself.
"Any over-ritualized religion since the dawn of time can make its priests say yes, we know, it is rotten, and hard luck, but just do as we say, keep at the ritual, stick it out, give us your money and you'll end up with the angels in heaven for evermore."

Let's face it; LDS beliefs are wacky. If one actually believes them, they're going to get mocked. To inoculate members against that, they're told they will be persecuted for their beliefs. That way, when people naturally point and laugh, members wear it like a badge of honor and it actually strengthens their testimony. "Wow, they said I'd be mocked and I am. How could our leaders have known? Clearly, this is god's church!"

The church is nothing if not clever BS.
God belief is for people who don't want to live life on the universe's terms.

Yes it is taught.

I remember when I was a missionary if people yelled at me or splashed me with snowy water from the streets I was getting persecuted for my beliefs. What is funny is I loved being persecuted because I was also taught that the more persecuted you get and the more you take it then you will recieve more blessings in this life and the life to come. I don't have any references but I do remember what I was taught.

The same applied in school if we were made fun of for being Mormon.

Although I remember one guy asking me if Mormons are aloud to fight. I said yeah we are. He said no your not and that if he hit me I couldn't hit him back. I said I would kick his ass if he hit me. Well I probably didn't say ass I probably said butt. haha

I know the Bible says:

“Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
—Matthew 5:10-12

The interesting part of this quote is the word "falsely".

Showing a mo the error(s) in the philosophy and theology is not persecuting them "falsely".

Too bad they can't make the distinction.

Well, not making that distinction is something else they're taught. In the LDS world, truth = anti-mormonism.

It appears to be a Christian way of thinking as well.
