Really? I didn't realize that last part.

Don't take this the wrong way, but are you serious or are you being sarcastic?

The personal interview system is actually one way the church teaches youth to lie. Answering truthfully (about masturbation) could lead to public embarrassment such as denial of priesthood advancement, denial of the sacrament, denied access to the temple, denial of sending in mission papers. There is also the humiliation of talking about something so private and condemned with your bishop.

I've never felt encouraged to lie. I see your point and I see how others can view it that way, but I don't think the Church's intention is ever to teach lying. The intention is to help people when they have personal struggles. Now, the question is, is masturbation or other sexual issues really worthy of personal struggle? It seems most here would say no. I honestly have never thought much about it. I mean when I imagine masturbation I'm a bit disturbed, but if its quite normal and stuff, then I can see the "no". But, then again, I'm a man who feels, at least to myself, normal. I don't see the need to masturbate and never have. I ain't expert enough to know whether I'm some exception or not.

So, what are people's thoughts?

Um, yeah, if you have never masturbated you are among a very few percentage points of males who never have. I'm talking less than 5% of males never have masturbated according to studies. I wonder why the thought of masturbation "disturbes" you. That is an interesting reaction.

Masturbation isn't a sexual sin. It isn't a sin. It isn't even worth it for the church to talk about, teach against or anything like unto it.

I think that if someone believes they have some kind of sexual dysfunction they should seek professional help. There really is nothing most bishops can do to help someone with those issues. In fact, they could very easily make them worse.

ETA: I see that some others have said 99%...or even 100%. That is not what the studies I have read say on the topic. I'm going to stick with my understanding that 95% percent of males masturbate at some point in their life.

Where can you verify this number? That seems like a made up assumption.

Doctors agree that it's healthy and helps prepare people for healthy sexual relationships later in life. It's especially important for women. Women who don't learn how to orgasm by themselves and are shamed about masturbation often have difficulty with sex once they're married.

Both of these two statements don't ring true in my limited experience, which includes myself and my wife. But, you might be right. who knows?

They often can't enjoy sex and see it as a chore. Masturbation is an evolved behavior and has many positive outcomes and no negative consequences. Moreover, there isn't a single word about it in any of the scriptures the LDS church uses. The church was totally neutral on masturbation until about 60 years ago.

Really? I didn't realize that last part.

LOL they usually don't tell you. :)

Masturbation isn't a sexual sin. It isn't a sin. It isn't even worth it for the church to talk about, teach against or anything like unto it.

The Church uses this particular doctrine to impose guilt on its membership. Guilt is the single most important motivator in the religious life of many Mormons.

Well, you would know if you would do a little reasearch. If neither you nor your wife ever masturbated and you both have a healthy sex life and she is orgasming then count yourself among the very lucky.

About 70% of women cannot orgasm from intercourse alone. That means it is normal to not orgasm every time or to need other methods of sex for a woman to orgasm.

This study they cite might be where I got my 95% number.

•5% of men and 11% of women have never masturbated (Janus & Janus, 1993).

Damn, I'm (we're) just naturally good I guess. Seriously, why would I research it if its never been any sort of issue for me, nor my wife?

I am abit curious now. Let's say 95% of men didn't masturbate and some 98% of women never did. What would that do with these studies that indicate how healthy it is? hmmm...makes me curious.
