LDS Toronto and Hoops, I will risk being overly obvious to point out that right wing might contain a real variety of view points some could be offensive to other right wing sorts of people. I think of myself as generally left leaning but hear all sorts of left wing stuff I reject, find seriously repulsive and wrong.(the abortion views held by "the left" would be an example but not the only one.

There may be a specific LDS culture form of right wing for which LDS Toronto was offended by. I certainly believe he did encounter it. It may not comport with every other version of right wing.

How did this thread suddenly turn into an interpretation of the Old Testament question? I sympathize with Ceebo comments. I think the Old Testament valuable and contains Gods actions building a foundation for Jesus life and death. I think at the same time it is a difficult mix of God leading and human limited understanding. That probably should not be used to hide the fact that the Old Testament contains harsh judgement on evil.

Drinking beer was worse than a lot of things in my world. It was worse than many things because it was 2 things: against the "law" AND it was taboo.

We heard stories growing up about these far off peoples called Catholics who drank wine at church but we didn't talk much about them. Wine was a little better than beer because Jesus used it as a prop once for one of his miracles.

Sock Puppet, whatcha think about Guiness? I just discovered it. I had a glass with some friends at thanksgiving dinner. Glorious!

I used to believe that the world was going to end at any moment, plus or minus a hundred years. So what was the big deal with a world going to pot? Well, now I'm thinking, we have a world that will last for oh I don't know, 50 million more years? We better try and make it a better place!

by the way, thanks for the fun posts! I love every one.

You wrote: "If they would just get off their lazy ass and get a job." Or something similar. Then you indicated that this is a "right wing" view. I countered with the fact that conservatives give more to charity than do liberals. If you are equating being charitable, which one could reasonably conclude from the OP, with compassion, then conservatives meet your standard. Liberals less so.

Reading comprehension is not your strong suit, huh, Hoops? Yes, I said that, but whether a Conservative gives more to the United Way than a Liberal really has nothing to do with the prevailing attitude.

It has everything to do with it. You indicated with your post that not giving to a person who is in difficult circumstances was indicative of conservatism.

Our hotel was right across from the British Museum (fantastic locale to frequent (no admission charge) those historical artifacts, including the Rosetta Stone and the Lindow man). It was also a block east of the northeast corner of Soho, my favorite part of London.

The entire time we were there, a man and his dog were perched out front of a theater on a busy intersection on Charring Cross Road (across from the Tottenham Court tube station). We stopped at a local grocery and bought some food for him. When we gave it to him, he looked in the bag and asked if next time we'd bring food for his dog. We were both blown over by this homeless man's charity towards his dog.

We straight away went back to the grocery and got some butcher scraps for the dog. We did not forget to make sure we had something for both of them each time we passed by them again during the remainder of our stay there. I never felt that good paying tithing or declaring during tithing settlement that I was a full tithe payer.

Yes, this is how I believe God wants us to behave.
Unfortunately His representative on earth feels it's more important that you donate to His Church and let the Presiding Bishop decide how to distribute your charity.

To the first part of the OP:

I've never given money to a person on the street (except Salvation Army) and I never would.

Why is that?

LDST, thanks for sharing your story. I've been lazy about giving money to homeless people. I need to do better.
