Um, the economy is not in total freefall. Black Friday set a record. The American economy has grown, albeit slowly and sluggishly, every quarter since the 3rd quarter of 2009. GDP growth for 2010 was 2.8%. Not great, but not in freefall. In 2011, the economy has been growing between 0.4% and 2.0% for the first three quarters. Again, not good, but not in freefall. Most economists now believe that the economy will avoid a double-dip recession. Of course, that doesn't mean things are good. Unemployment is way too high, and to get those numbers to change significantly in a positive direction, the economy will need to grow much faster than 2%. But it is simply inaccurate to say the economy is in "total freefall."

The way Romney panders shamelessly to the worst right-wing fringe just infuriates me, and makes it impossible for me to support him. I know Gingrich's views have changed over time, and he's been accused of flip-flopping before too, but I watched the exchange between Gingrich and Romney and some others over illegal immigration in that recent debate, and Gingrich was the only guy who said anything I could support. I even admired him for saying it. Romney looked like a real asshat, but apparently the extreme right fringe of the GOP will only vote for an asshat, and Romney really wants to be their man.

The only way I could support Romney is if I felt comfortable that what he's said so far in this primary race isn't what he really, deep-down, believes. Given how flippy floppy he is, that's entirely conceivable. But not something I can admire him for.

This is where EAllusion steps in and says Gingrich only said what he said in that debate to corner some niche of the GOP primary voters that he thinks he can parlay into an eventual win, or at least boost his book sales and speaking fees. :-)

Sure and they lie as bad as they say he did with his recent add. The quote on health care is out of context. He was and is for exchanges. But then he went on to elaborate what else in Obama's plan he opposed.

All politicians change views. Romney no more than others. Check out Gingrich. How about Obama and all his promises? What about Gitmo?

I agree they all do a bit of zig-zagging, but Romney has made an art form out of it during his public career.

I am finding it increasingly difficult even to feign respect for the real Romney that may exist somewhere in that mess. It is a leap of tremendous faith to grant him credibility founded on solid principles and sound judgment as a politician.

I can't say I'd support more illegal and mass immigration if we are having so much trouble with high unemployment rates. I don't believe that illegal immigration is a boon to the economy. If it weren't a net loss, it wouldn't be illegal.
