Illegal immigration is a loss to America to the extent that America is a welfare state. They take advantage of free medicine, education and other social services because the welfare state politicians have decided to offer that stuff.

I can see enforcing some kind of immigration laws when it comes to criminal activity or drug cartels, etc. But Yahoo Bot is right that immigration is the life blood of an expanding economy, etc. People forget how this country became so prosperous in the first place.

And "criminal activity" or "drug cartels" are not the exclusive province of immigrants. Thus, Homeland Security would legitimately have a reason to keep drugs and criminals out of the United States, or in crossing the border, but that objective should apply to U.S. citizens as well as Mexican nationals.

Plus, I cannot conceive of any legitimate scenario that would keep a determined person from sneaking a nuclear weapon across the border. Border security is a fiction. A big fiction.

Combat crime as it occurs, although if we decriminalized drugs we'd have a much more peaceful border.

I don't think you or anyone can accurately identify this so-called "fringe" in terms of what political positions they stand for. Heck, when one looks at what the Tea Party stands for, it's merely moderate middle America. To get out in the "fringe" you'll have to look at less than 1% of the American population to the right and perhaps 20-30% of the population to the left and Romney of course is speaking to neither.

It's those 20-30% on the Left, who must at all costs, portray middle America as the "radical fringe" to keep people from noticing that it is they themselves who are the fringe.

I lived in Latin America for two years. I didn't like it much. I was glad to come home to my own people and culture. Perhaps that makes me a xenophobe, but that's how I felt about it. It's sad to think that country I was so happy to come home to soon won't be much different than any other Latin American country as we adopt their culture, values, way of life, and basically get bred out of existence genetically.

Yahoo bot, do you give to every beggar that asks for your money on the street? Borders are no more unchristian than capitalism is unchristian. Secondly fixing the latin american government is not your place as a foreigner and they wouldn't permit you to do it even if you were willing to forfeit the resources to do so. The biggest reason for poverty in Latin America is their unwillingness to reduce their reproduction and population growth rate to a level that a growing economy could handle. And don't think that same overpopulation problem will not swallow our system of government into chaos just as it does their government in their own countries.

Did we not have any produce in the supermarket 40 years ago before we were being overrun by Latin American overpopulation? I promise you wealthy business owners taking advantage of this cheap labor source and pushing their healthcare bill off onto the American taxpayer to better your bottom line will come back to bite your posterity every bit as bad as the mess left after slavery has bitten the posterity of southern slave owners. We'll wish we picked our own peaches and drywalled our houses even more than we now wish we'd picked our own cotton.

You know that most of your taxes aren't used for poor folks' welfare, right? A vast amount is spent on national defense... speaking of which, my BIL was in the army for 20 years and had 9 kids, and moved them around the country and even to Germany for several years on a nice military salary (and now a nice pension). But he never fought in any of our wars, partly on account (I believe) of his having such a big family (who I love very much - don't think for a second I have your kind of attitude about people with big families). Anyway, your taxes definitely paid him to reproduce. Ironic, no?
