Stemelbow throwdown on Mattie
Re: Stemelbow throwdown on Mattie
We do not always know who the sock puppets are. Sometimes it is obvious based on IP addresses. Other times, it is not. Somone who is Internet savy can easily use a proxy IP for one ID and not for another.

Thanks Liz! I'm not that Internet savvy, so I don't know all the ins and outs.
How do Mods feel about sock puppets? Is it viewed as a necessary evil or just more fun for the board? I haven't decided myself if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Puppets do seem to stir up conversation.
This, or any other post that I have made or will make in the future, is strictly my own opinion and consequently of little or no value.

Personally, I am not that fond of them. I think that they are funny once in a while, when used as a joke. The Bednar sock puppet is a good example.
I think that people genuinely trying to trick others is really not great. However, there has been no rule established against it. That would be Shades' call.

I very highly dislike them.
Is it viewed as a necessary evil or just more fun for the board?
None of the above.
The reason I despise them is because they artificially inflate our membership numbers.

Thanks, Liz and Shades, for the insightful answers. It's something I've wondered about. Is it something that you can correct, or is it not worth the trouble to try?
If I had to vote, I think I would be in favor of no sock puppets (except, of course, the poster named "Sock Puppet").

Regarding your question .. I can't respond to Mattie without having read her posts, which I haven't.
Briefly, my comment is that I have found in reading posts directed to Stem..that there was too much piling on of insults. When it came to Darth's autism insult ..I was disappointed because I respect Darth's knowledge on Mormonism and his logical reasoning and thought perhaps an interesting and productive discussion might evolve...but that insult understandably put Stem off. I haven't been following the board closely the last couple of weeks, so I don't know what is going on currently.

This is what started a lot of it:
Mattie wrote:When I was in junior high school, there were special ed kids who rode on the same bus with us. There was always a group of stupid, immature boys who loved to gang up and make fun of one particular Down’s syndrome kid.
Mattie's comparison of Stem to a Down's Syndrome child.
Then this:
Mattie wrote:It's obvious that "stemelbow" is just a sockpuppet you people use to make it seem like TBMs are all dim-witted and gullible, etc.
You're a twisted bunch.
It kinda got things stirred up.

I yet think Mattie's surmise is perhaps the most logical explanation for stemelbow.Quasimodo wrote:Then this:Mattie wrote:It's obvious that "stemelbow" is just a sockpuppet you people use to make it seem like TBMs are all dim-witted and gullible, etc.
