Did I just commit an "excommunicable" offense?

Post by _Abaddon »

So an old friend of mine I found it is being baptized.

I decided to send him an email and ask him why.

I then recommended that he check out MormonThink.com and read some particular sections on that site. I told him that anyone thinking of joining the Mormon faith should read that site.

What would you do as a Bishop if you knew I was leading investigators to MormonThink.com?

Given that the site is factual, I can't imagine anyone would be upset.

Whether or not this was a good thing for you to do is not for man to decide. We can certainly give you our opionion; but our opinion will not make a difference in your Judgment. We each will face our Savior alone on a one-on-one basis.

My opinion is that you should be asking the Holy Ghost this question. If you are not asking Him, since this is a pretty hefty issue as far as an investigator's potential relationship with God is concerned, I would be tempted to say that by asking us instead of going to God for the answer, that you are afraid to ask God.

I'm new to this board so don't know anything about you, what your story is, nothing. At first blush, therefore, your OP appears as a challenge meant to be shocking to people. As such, it is a very worldly action which seems very removed from any personal spiritual connection with God. Yet He is the one you will be answering to--regardless of whether your actions were motivated by good intentions or evil by intentions. From Heavenly Father's perspective, I don't think He is as interested in our institutional religious affiliation as He is interested in whether we are helping someone find Him, helping someone to build a better relationship with Him, or if we are working against Him and His purposes.

If I were your Bishop and found out you were doing this, I would need to take into consideration many things....how active are you (doesn't appear that you are), have you done this before, if YOU feel strongly about continuing such activity then YOU obviously are not interested in remaining a member of the Church. I would probably present the issue to the Stake President. Actions like yours indicate that in your heart you have already left the Church. The Stake President may decide to have your Bishop hold a court for you and begin the administrative processes of making your desires official and then remove your name from the records of the Church. This would be done in reaction to your own actions and desires. If you should decide you are not ready to have your name removed, then you would need to show sufficient desire to stay. So, basically, this would be up to you and what you want.

Best regards,

jo

If I were the Bishop I would be checking if you'd paid your tithing.

Same... however, a bishop, in general, would do something completely different. Here's why:

The bishop would find out about this behaviour in PEC or Ward Council. Missionaries and the ward mission leader attend that meeting and would report that their investigator who had set a baptismal date has been having doubts because Abaddon has been pointing his friend towards anti-mormon material (never mind that it may be factual). If Abaddon is not a member of the church, there is absolutely nothing the bishop could do to Abaddon. However, if Abaddon is affiliated with the church, either as an active member or an inactive member, the bishop would be pressured by the PEC/Ward Council to issue a warning of some sort to Abaddon.
