Let's go with a dress code. But please, please don't implement it on the grounds of curves. OMG. I know you would never agree with their silly reasoning, but I would like to make sure you understand why I'm criticizing this decision.

I don’t get the fear of curves thing. Out of the possible justifications that could be given, that was probably the worst.

I understand that discipline can be good for students, but this seems a little ridiculous. Sure, some people suit skinny jeans, and some don't. But curves?

I've seen a lot of ladies in business suits, and they look ultra conservative. They still show curves as God gave them.

Men

A clean and well-cared-for appearance should be maintained. Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, revealing, or form fitting. Shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extreme styles or colors, and trimmed above the collar, leaving the ear uncovered. Sideburns should not extend below the earlobe or onto the cheek. If worn, moustaches should be neatly trimmed and may not extend beyond or below the corners of the mouth. Men are expected to be clean-shaven; beards are not acceptable. Earrings and other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

Women

Dresses, skirts, and shorts must be knee-length or longer. Hairstyles should be clean and neat, avoiding extremes in styles or colors. Excessive ear piercing (more than one per ear) and all other body piercing are not acceptable. Shoes should be worn in all public campus areas.

In other words, fear of curves. For what other reason might the "form fitting" comment be in there?

Ask some of the professors around here who the better students are. Common answer is Ex-cons and vets. Ask them about some of the habits good students tend to have, like bringing your text to class. There is no direct cause and correlation to the fact that because someone merely forgets to put their text in their backpack means they suck as a student, but students who consistently bring their text show that attention to detail, that discipline that is required to do well in school.

Totally true. Also students in math and the sciences are often better students because they've usually mastered some abstract thinking.

Good students "look" like students. I don't mean they all dress the same, but they show up with backpacks with their books, notebooks, and pens and pencils. They sit where they can see the teacher and the blackboard (i.e., they don't hug the back wall). Their books are clearly "worked over:" notes in margins, tabs or post-its to make pages easy to find, they rarely use the dreaded yellow highlighter (they write notes, not just underline). They dress for comfortable roaming around campus and sitting and reading: many styles accommodate that. What they don't wear is anything that would look "awesome" at a Phi Delt kegger.

I don't know too many academics who wear a uniform.

Oh really? Of course there are academic uniforms. What I wear signals a great deal to my students.
