Read it again:

I am neither an abolitionist nor a pro-slavery man.

He was giving a hypothetical. This isn't about "freeing slaves".

Willy Law asked for a "positive quote". This isn't positive?

For their abuse of that race, the whites will be cursed, unless they repent...

"I'm neutral on the slave question." Wow, what a stand-up guy.

Oh, yes. I think it is lovely that Brigham Young thinks that white people will be cursed if they are not nice to the human beings whom they own as chattel, a practice on which Brigham Young is indifferent.

It's part of a quote.

Journal of Discourses.

But also (probably in this thread) he says:

March 8, 1863: Brigham Young, during a conference talk in the Tabernacle, as recorded in the Journal of Discourses 10:109, states:

“Shall I tell you the law of God in regard to the African race? "If the white man who belongs to the chosen seed mixes his blood with the seed of Cain, the penalty, under the law of God, is death on the spot. This will always be so.” emphasis mine

Being anti slavery is one thing. Racist is another.

Irrelevant to Willy Law's request.

Irrelevant to Willy Law's request.

This is what Willy Law said:
I'm interested. In fact I am very interested in seeing "a lot" of Brigham Young quotes that are positive about blacks.
Let's see em.

edit: You best shot is: "For their abuse of that race, the whites will be cursed, unless they repent." Right?

No, Ray, it's not irrelevant, because your out-of-context quote is not responsive. That quote, taken in context, does not say black people are equal to white people. It only says that masters should not abuse the human being whom they have purchased.

You'll grasp at any straw to find something positive to say about the ecclesiastical apartheid that the LDS Church practiced for 148 years.

Ray---

Brigham Young also said that we should not abuse animals, and we would be censured if we did not treat animals properly.

August 1972 Ensign

Brigham Young also showed concern for animals. For example, in a sermon preached in Salt Lake’s old Tabernacle, he said, “Let the people be holy, and the earth under their feet will be holy. Let the people be holy, and filled with the Spirit of God, and every animal and creeping thing will be filled with peace. … The more purity that exists, the less is the strife; the more kind we are to our animals, the more will peace increase, and the savage nature of the brute creation will vanish away.” (Journal of Discourses, vol. 1, p. 203.)

President Young also warned that the Latter-day Saints would “never inherit the Celestial Kingdom” until they learned to take proper care of the things on this earth entrusted to them by the Lord. Specifically referring to livestock, he said the people should “take care of their cattle and horses” and the man who did not do it would “lay himself liable to censure in the eyes of justice.” (JD, vol. 11, p. 141.)

This must mean that he thought that animals and human beings were equal.

Really? Refresh your memory. Here is Willy Law's quote:

Willy Law wrote:Allright. One, give me one positive thing Brigham Young has said about blacks and your off the hook.
[/quote]

You're omitting his last request, which is typical.

Yeah, see? He said he would settle for one, so we have Brigham Young saying that while he is indifferent to abolishing slavery, black slaves should be treated at least as well as livestock.

What a positive thing to say about the descendants of Ham.
